How to Use the HMC

8.0 Service Management

Traditionally, service and support have been thought of as resources you call on when you have a problem or failure. The service and support tools described in this section can help you to keep your server up and running and also save you time.

Some of the capabilities that are provided by the Service Management tasks are:

  • Monitoring servers
  • Monitoring logical partitions
  • Communicating with your service and support organization
  • Enabling remote support

Service tasks can be used on your server to enable your service environment. If you are using logical partitions, the service tasks run in each logical partition and work with the HMC as part of the service environment. The service tasks that provide this function on the HMC for the POWER6 servers are located under Service Management.

Service Management
Service Management tasks are used to help service personnel to diagnose and repair problems on partitioned systems. The HMC gathers various system management issues at one control point, allowing service personnel to use the system management tasks to determine an appropriate service strategy.

Service Management tasks let you view or work on errors logged against a system. You can manage these errors here, and even be guided through a repair of the problem!

Connectivity Tasks

Connectivity tasks allow you to set up connectivity between your managed systems and your service provider. Call-home enables the HMC to automatically report problems to IBM.

Remote connections, call-home requests, and remote support requests can all be managed here. Information identifying your system and system administrators is controlled here.
