FC 5886 19-inch SAS I/O Enclosure

FC 5886 is a 19-inch two EIA rack-mount Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) I/O enclosure. It provides power, cooling, and SAS interface connections for up to 12 hot-swap SAS disk drives, whose slots are located on the front of the enclosure. The FC 5886 enclosure design has no internal cables; all power and signal cables exit out the rear side of the enclosure.

The FC 5886 enclosure works with any IBM System p and IBM System i POWER6 system. In addition to the disk drives, other features include:

  • Two redundant and hot-swap power supplies, each containing redundant air moving devices.
  • Two redundant and hot-swap Enclosure Services Managers (ESMs), which serve as SAS expanders.
  • The disk drives, ESMs, and powers supplies all plug into a midplane.

Note: The FC 5886 is very similar in concept, function, attachment, and serviceability to the IBM TotalStorage EXP24 (7031-D24/FC 5786 and 7031-T24/FC 5787). One difference, however, is that unlike the SCSI repeater architecture in the IBM TotalStorage EXP24, each FC 5886 ESM connects to all SAS disk bays within an enclosure. With two ESMs, there are redundant data paths to all disk drives.
