3.1 Checkout Procedure
 
 

The checkout procedure is a sequence of tasks that will help you diagnose a problem in the HMC.

The checkout procedure uses tools and diagnostic information that you must become familiar with before running the procedure. These tools and information include:

  • POST beep codes and error codes
  • Error logs
  • Troubleshooting tables
  • LED indicators
  • Diagnostic programs
  • BIOS
  • Power-supply symptoms
  • Other items to check

These tools and information are discussed in this Diagnostic section.

Performing the checkout procedure

To perform the checkout procedure, complete the following steps:

  1. Is the HMC part of a cluster?
    • No: Go to step 2.
    • Yes: Shut down all failing HMCs that are related to the cluster. Go to step 2.

  2. Complete the following steps:
    1. Turn off the HMC and all external devices.
    2. Check all cables and power cords.
    3. Set all display controls to the middle positions.
    4. Turn on all external devices.
    5. Turn on the HMC. If the HMC does not start, check the troubleshooting tables. (Refer to Troubleshooting Tables.)

 

 
 
    1. For the 7042-CR4, check the system-error LED on the operator information panel. If it is flashing, check the light path diagnostics LEDs located on the light path diagnostic panel.

      For the 7042-C06, check the system-error LED on the front panel. If it is lit, check the LEDs on the system-board
      .

    2. Check for the following results.
  1. Did one or more beeps sound?
    • No: Find the failure symptom in Troubleshooting Tables. If necessary, run the diagnostic programs. (Refer to the Service Guide for Deskside and Rack-mounted Consoles manual for information about running the diagnostic programs.)
      • If you receive an error, refer to the Service Guide for Deskside and Rack-mounted Consoles manual for information about the diagnostic error codes.
      • If the diagnostic programs were completed successfully and you still suspect a problem, refer to Solving Undetermined Problems.

    • Yes: Refer to the Service Guide for Deskside and Rack-mounted Consoles manual for information about the POST beep codes. If necessary, refer to Solving Undetermined Problems.
