Restoring HMC Data

The restoration of backup data should only be used in conjunction with a re-installation of the HMC from the product CDs. See Backing Up HMC Data.

Restoring from DVD

  1. If the critical console data has been archived on a DVD-RAM, the re-installation of the Product CDs will prompt the user to insert the DVD-RAM containing the archived console data at installation end.
  2. On first boot of the newly installed HMC, a check will be made to see if the DVD-RAM is inserted. The data will then be automatically restored. Archived data is stored as a compressed tar file. DVD archived data is stored in the file backuphdr.tgz.

Restoring from a Remote System

  1. If the critical console data has been archived remotely, the network settings must be re-configured manually to enable access to the remote system after the HMC is newly installed. Then launch the HMC Code Update-->Restore Remote Console Data task.

Select the type of remote restore. Choose Restore from remote NFS server or Restore from remote FTP server.

If you choose Restore from remote NFS server, the screen at left is displayed. Follow the directions on the screen to restore the critical console data. The data is then offloaded to the HMC from the remote system and will automatically be installed when the system is rebooted.

If you choose Restore from remote FTP server, the screen at left is displayed. Follow the directions on the screen to restore the critical console data. The data is then offloaded to the HMC from the remote system and will automatically be installed when the system is rebooted.
