Error description

  • Following the procedure for restore a Windows Vista (or higher
machine) the Windows activation may be incorrect.
Windows update may not work as well. Other anomalies may occur.
The Windows Tivoli Storage Manager client is incorrectly adding
excludes, non-registry hive data, for objects
    in the
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\hivelist
    subkey.
The non-registry hive data is anything found under the
    c:\windows directory in this case.
The excludes result in the folllowing objects being excluded
    from the backup:
    c:\windows\serviceprofiles\NetworkService\ntuser.dat
    c:\windows\serviceprofiles\LocalService\ntuser.dat
The excluding of these objects can lead to incorrect
    permission's after a SystemState restore.
    Example:
    After a System State restore:
    The HKEY_USERS/S-1-5-20 key has
    RESTRICTED, SYSTEM, Administrator, and Administrators
    A fresh install of Windows:
    The HKEY_USERS/S-1-5-20 key has
    RESTRICTED, SYSTEM, NETWORK SERVICE, Administrators.
    Initial Impact: High
    Versions affected: 5.5, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 6.4

Local fix

  • Manually add the correct permissions to the registry keys.

Problem conclusion

  • The backup-archive client has been changed so that the user
profiles for the built-in "Network" and "Local Services"
profiles are no longer omitted from the backup, provided
that Open File Support (OFS) is used to back up the Microsoft
Windows boot drive (usually C:). It is best practice to use
OFS when backing up local Windows file systems.
