IZ98779: MKSYSB RETURN CODE IS 0 WHEN BACKBYNAME FAILED DUE TO PACKING APPLIES TO AIX 5300-12

APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • With APAR IZ77870 installed, backbyname will stop
with rc=1 if a packing error occurred. The Following
error
messages will be displayed :
0512-003 savevg may not have been able to archive some
files
backup: 0511-084 An internal packing error occurred:
incorrect size
backup: 0511-442 <file_path> will not be backed up.
So the remaining files will not be backed up.
But the mksysb script wiil set rc=0 in done_backup in
that case.

Local fix

  • disable packing option of mksysb but then the mksysb size
will be greater.
exclude files using mksysb -e option and
/etc/exclude.rootvg
but then these files won't be archived.

* bos.rte.archive fileset between the levels of 5.3.12.1 and
* 5.3.12.3.

* PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
* The 'mksysb' command returns 0 in the event of a packing
* error.  Installing from the mkssyb will fail.

* RECOMMENDATION:
* Install APAR IZ98779.

  • Modified backup code to return appropriate error code to
mksysb.
