Q&As from the web chat

Q. Is there a recommended number of users for people using Traveler?
    [Contributers answered with numbers of users ranging from 30 to 1500. Several configurations were in the 500+ range with many users having more than one device.].

    What is the number of recommended users for a 64-bit server?
    Example 1: Windows 2008 64-bit system with 8 cores, 32GB RAM, 2200 active users (still growing).
    Example 2: Windows 2008 64-bit system, 8GB RAM, 200+ users. This runs much better than our former 32-bit server with 4GB RAM.

    Refer to Lotus Notes Traveler performance for more information.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. How many users can be configured on a single 32-bit Traveler server with 4 GB RAM?
    A. On a 32-bit server, 300 is the recommended limit with no more than 400. Addressable memory is the main issue.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Should we upgrade Lotus Domino to V8.5.3 before upgrading Traveler?
    A. Yes.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Does V8.5.3 include the fixes in
    A. There are few more fixes in V8.5.2.4 than in 8.5.3 but in general, the fixes in V8.5.2 are in 8.5.3.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. When upgrading from V8.5.2 to 8.5.3, do you have to go via V8.5.2.4 or can you go directly to V8.5.3?
    A. You can go straight to 8.5.3.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. When upgrading Traveler from V8.5.2.1 straight to 8.5.3, you seem to claim that you must upgrade Traveler prior to upgrading Domino. Why?
    A. Domino V8.5.2.3 (Fix Pack 3) changed one of the API calls used by the Traveler server. Running Domino V8.5.2.3 and Lotus Traveler (or lower Fix Pack level) can cause a server crash scenario.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. When will Traveler be available for the iSeries?
    A. We have a requirement in for the iSeries on Traveler but no date is available yet. The i5/OS system is supported by Domino V8.5.2 and V8.5.3 and both Traveler V8.5.2 and V8.5.3 run on the i5/OS system. The new features will come in the 8.5.3 fix pack.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. How do you know that Traveler is experiencing low memory and/or heavy usage?
    A. We are working on a tool for this.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. When must you increase HTTP threads? How do you do this?
    A. Since Traveler devices utilize Domino web server HTTP threads when communicating with the server, if the number of active HTTP threads is insufficient, performance problems can occur.

    Active HTTP threads should be 1.2 times the number of devices using Traveler. Setting the threads is done in the Domino Server Document. Refer to Tuning active HTTP threads for Traveler for more information and background.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Is there an automatic way to increase the number of HTTP threads? What if you're not always aware that a large increase in users has occurred? If this can't be done automatically, can there be an alert or log entry stating that the server requires a restart?
    A. The status commands ("tell Traveler status" and "stat show") display warnings when the HTTP threads are near the limits.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Can a requirement be added to automatically update the NTS_MAX_HTTP_THREADS with an automatic e-mail to the Traveler admin to restart?
* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Our traveler server has 4GB RAM and is dying almost daily.
    A. Refer to Document #1568658 , "Traveler server experiencing high CPU," for several suggestions about handling high CPU.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Can Traveler data be pushed to the iCloud with the i5/OS?
    A. The Apple iCloud is being released momentarily and once it's out, we'll determine at that time. The documentation reads as if it will be separate (similar to MobileMe) but we won't really know until we get it and the tools that go with it from Apple.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Is there an introduction to Traveler available on implementing and upgrading?
* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Is partial wipe available on the Google Android?
    A. Partial wipe has always been available for Android.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Is there a plan to let us see what's in the Trash folder on our devices?
    A. We have a requirement in for the Trash folder to display and to sync the Trash folder but it is not in V8.5.3.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. As an admin, can you get a notification if a new user registers with the Traveler server?
    A. There's a new feature in V8.5.3 in which devices must be approved to get registered. These have the notification feature.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Does Traveler support Windows 2003 Server R1?
    A. All versions of Windows 2003/2008 are supported except Itanium-based.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Is RIM/BlackBerry supported yet on Traveler?
    A. There are no plans to support BlackBerry.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. If there are no plans to support BlackBerry, why is BlackBerry mentioned in your slides?
    A. We have a "mobile strategy" slide for all mobile solutions including Traveler, Sametime, Lotus Connections, Lotus Mobile Connect, and BlackBerry.
* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Is it possible to erase company data immediately on the iPhone when it gets compromised?
    A. No, this not possible.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Apple or Android devices stop connecting to Traveler when an operating system patch is pushed to the device. We've tried new credentials but they usually fail meaning the profile must be deleted and re-installed. This is very frustrating for the user. Is the only solution to reset Traveler?
    A. Apple often "forgets" credentials on an upgrade. Re-entering credentials is the only known workaround. In our testing environment on i5/OS, we're sometimes asked to authenticate again but that's all we've experienced.

    Refer to Document #1512456, " Traveler Support for Apple i5/OS and Apple iPhone 4S," for more information about Traveler support for Apple.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Is "push mail" in the roadmap for Android devices?
    A. Push has always been there for Android

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Can two Traveler accounts be configured on the same device?
    A. It depends on the operating system you are using. Apple can have two (on the iPhone and iPad) but not on the other devices. The i5/OS supports multiple accounts. Android has it as a future requirement. The native operating system will or will not support multiple accounts.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. How do you set up multiple profiles?
    A. Go to the servlet and log in as a different profile from the first one. You will be prompted to download and install a second profile. This will configure the new profile in your device.
* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Where do you find these two accounts?
    A. In the mail section of the device. After you configure multiple accounts, there will be multiple profiles which you can view. You select the specific profile or account that you've already configured.
* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Are meetings integrated into the native calendar in Android? Can you reserve rooms and resources while creating a meeting?
    A. Right now, only the calendar application is available. Rooms and Resources is a requirement but is not in V8.5.3

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. The mail file owner of our Traveler users becomes the Traveler server itself. Is there any way to prevent this?
    A. We're aware of this problem and it will be fixed in a later release. However, upgrading will solve the problem. Refer to the article, " Before you upgrade the server," for more information.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. What is the configuration for and how many users can run on Linux on a virtual machine? How much RAM should there be in the VM?
    A. We have a pilot running a 64-bit Red Hat VM, 8GB RAM, 4 CPUs, 1500 users with no issues so far.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Has anyone ever moved Traveler to a new server? Do you have to touch each device when moving Traveler?
    A. You can move to a different operating system without touching the devices if you use the same host name or proxy to route the traffic. However, you're better off with a new clean system in which all users can re-sync their data.

    Refer to " Moving Traveler to a new server" on the Notes/Domino wiki for more information.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Can Traveler type-ahead pull LDAP entries from Domino's Directory Assistance?
    A. Type-ahead / lookup will use Directory Assistance (DA) which can include LDAP information and is for any entry in DA. It is done on the user's mail server and follows whatever is set up on DA. DA also allows you to have multiple inputs

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Is the lookup done on the home mail server or in Directory Assistance running on the Traveler server?
    A. Lookup is done on the user's mail server.
* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Is there an alternate way to filter a corporate address book? Can the corporate contacts / directory be loaded on to a mobile device?
    A. We have a requirement to be able to sync additional (corporate) address books as personal contacts (separated or not) but that functionality is not in V8.5.3.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Can Groups from a user's local address book be found when doing a lookup?
    A. Mobile devices are not set up to create Groups because it's difficult to sync them to the devices. But there are users who created Groups on their local address books and set them so that other users can't see them.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Can we look up user names in the Global Address List that have three-character names?
    A. The default is now 3 but in previous versions, you can configure the lookup minimum length.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. We have a corporate contact database that is based on names.nsf. Can we set the lookup to search the database?
    A. You can create a group that is allowed to access the server. For security reasons, only users permitted to use Traveler devices can log into the server via HTTP and use Traveler.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. When we open encrypted mail in iPhones and iPads, a password is requested every time. Is there any setting that can prevent a consistent password prompt?
    A. Apple claims that the Exchange account is a web account because of the /servlet/traveler URL so it clears the password on some updates. We have argued with Apple that the path is not important Apple but they are unwilling to change it even though they know this applies to Exchange accounts.

    The only known workaround is to set up a web site rule to substitute the ActiveSync URL to /servlet/traveler/ASURL. We will be updating the wiki with more information.
* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Is there any possibility of synching To Do's or the Journal to mobile devices? Are there any plans to sync Journal / Notes with the iPhone or OOO? [There were many requests for this option.]
    A. Doing analysis on this functionality is a high priority. It is not in V8.5.3. To Do's and Journal vary per device and Android and Apple also have requirements. Journal / Notes / To Do synching on i5/OS are in our enhancement request. Team Extracomm has an iPhone app for OOO. We have noted your interest in all these requests.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. We're trying to automate by controlling which apps will sync to Traveler. Will user information such as contacts sync?
    A. Contacts should sync automatically just like all other data.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. We have not been able to download the Android installer via a URL or an IP. Sending an e-mail to is the only way we can configure Androids.
    A. This sounds like the known self-signed Secure Socket Layer (SSL) issue with Android, documented as follows:

    * Document #1457494, "Problem downloading and installing the Lotus Mobile Installer for Android devices".
    * Document #1515125, "Unable to download Traveler client over SSL on Android OS 2.3.x devices when only 256-bit SSL cipher key is enabled."

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Any chance of getting the Drafts folder to show up on Traveler using an iPhone?
    A. Apple doesn't sync Drafts documents to or from the server. Apple could change this but at present, the Drafts folder does not sync.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Is there documentation for the NTSConfig.xml file?
    A. The NTSConfig.xml file contains some synchronization and server parameters including default values for devices such as logging level, attachment size, and some server timeouts. In general, it is not necessary to modify the NTSConfig.xml file since it contains many values that you should not change. These values are not documented.

    Refer to Traveler configuration files for information.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Is there a way to extend battery life on the Android? Our devices are connected all the time and life extension is a problem.
    A. You can set Traveler to use SMS (Short Message Service) for auto-sync which can increase battery life. Refer to Using SMS mode for auto sync for information on how to do this.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Will Traveler offer an API so that third parties can interface with it? RIM does this with their BlackBerry Resource Kit for their server. It would be helpful to allow third-party Mobile Device Management tools to be able to interface programmatically with Traveler.
    A. There is a future requirement for this option but currently there are no APIs for third-party applications,
* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Is there any way to automate the Traveler User & Device delete upon termination of a Lotus account?
    A. There is a future requirement for this but it is not in V8.5.3.
* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. On what devices does the Lotus Mobile Installer work?
    A. Lotus Mobile Installer (LMI) works in Windows Mobile, Android, and Nokia. It is built into the Notes client in V8.5.3. LMI doesn't apply to the i5/OS since it is a profile update on that platform.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Is defragmentation of Traveler an operating system defragmentation or something different?
    A. Traveler defragmentation is for internal databases, not done on the operating system. The defrag command is "load traveler -defrag".
* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Does defragmentation have to be done for Traveler even if we do regular operating system defragmentations?
* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. How frequently should Traveler be defragmented? Is there a way to query the Traveler database to see when it was last defragged?
    A. There isn't a command to see when Traveler was last defragged but there is a new notes.ini file parameter that will defragment Traveler on restart if it has been more than "N" days since the last one. Refer to Traveler Database Defragmentation for Improved Performance for more information.
* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. If you have Diskeeper installed on the server, will it defragment the database as well?
    A. No. You must defrag the Traveler database directly.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Is it possible to get a Sametime chat from Traveler on a mobile ?
    A. You can use QuipIM for a Sametime chat with a Sametime mobile. Sametime is now native for Android and is available on the Passport Advantage site . The Android client for Sametime is available for the Sametime V8.5.2 server. Sametime native for i5/OS is coming soon.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. If you download an attachment to your device, is it encrypted by default or is there a setting needed to encrypt it on the server or device?
    A. On Android, an attachment is encrypted. but if it is exported, it becomes unencrypted on the SD card.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Can we expect cluster support for Traveler and if so, when?
    A. We're working on this for a future release. Clustering of mail servers is supported but not clustering on Traveler at this time. Refer to Clustering and failover for more information.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. If Server 1 goes offline and Server 2 is in a cluster with Server 1, will Traveler start using Server 2 to send mail?
    A. Yes. It is based on the names.nsf entry or the cluster database. Cluster should find the clustermate of the user's mail file to continuing sync to the device.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Will there be a way to read encrypted AND copy-prevented e-mails on Traveler?
    A. There is no planned change for "do not copy" e-mails.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Is there an option to reset the passcode for a user so a wipe can be avoided?
    A. You can't do this through Traveler. You'd have to use an MDM solution to do this.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Any chance to get remote wipe on i5/OS? If remote wipe is not an MDM solution, what about a remote password reset?
A. A remote password change would be done via MDM. If you are asking how remote wipe works, it is through the push / sync channels.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. How many Domino domain user IDs can we configure on one Traveler server? How many can a single Traveler server support? Is there a maximum limit on number of users allowed in a multiple environment?
    A. With the proper setup, Traveler can talk to mail servers in any number of domains. Multiple domains should work.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Are there any failover scenarios available? Do we have to wait until high availability is released?
    A. We are working on high availability support since this is the way Traveler will handle failover.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. We installed Traveler in a Domino domain but all our users can access the Traveler configuration on their handheld.
    A. Create a Group in your directory and update the Traveler access field in the Traveler section of the Server Document. Add only those users allowed to access the Traveler server to that group.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Is there any support for attendee status on invites in I5/OS? Can you create a meeting request and check attendee availability in Traveler?
A. We have a requirement to add attendee status to mobile devices but do not currently support it.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. How can we prevent a device wipe if a user gets 9 tries on 10 passcode attempts before the wipe occurs? We want users to call the Help Desk if they forget their passwords.
    A. First of all, you don't want to wipe on the 10th wrong passcode. This is completely controlled by the device's operating system. In Apple devices, you have to wait longer between each attempt so that should give users time to call the Help Desk. We have a requirement in for this functionality.
* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. is there going to be support for multiple signatures on i5/OK? Different signatures for personal and work?
    A. Since that is Apple's code, we don't know if they will change it.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Are there any new statistics added to the Domino stats table, so that they can be easily queried remotely? Examples:
Traveler.Status = Green
Traveler.Version = 8.5.3
Traveler.LastDeviceSyncDate = [datetime]
    A. There may be some new stats but there aren't new ones for the ones you specifically asked for. The version and constraint is now in the Traveler stats but the Green status is not there.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. When you look at Traveler statistics under Push Devices, you can see ActiveSync and HTTP. If you disable 8642 for ActiveSync, will i5/OS devices switch automatically to HTTP?
    A. Only Windows Mobile and Nokia every used TCP push so this doesn't apply to Apple or Android. ActiveSync is HTTP-based anyway. We label it as ActiveSync since the protocol data is different from the Traveler HTTP push. Port 8642 was only for TCP push so it never applied to ActiveSync or HTTP.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q. Is there any way to get rid of a device in Traveler if the console command does not work? You get an error that the device name isn't correct even though it's taken from the Server Document.
    A. The device name may be gone from normal records but not the security records. Two commands are usually needed to completely remove the device.

    The "tell" commands should always work so either the user or device name doesn't match what Traveler has. Make sure they match what you see in the "tell traveler show <user>" output. Try the command, "tell traveler security delete device user". You can also use the asterisk ( * ) for all devices but that may remove devices that you don't want removed.

    Refer to Deleting a user from Traveler for more information.

* * * * * * * * * * *
Q: Is there going to be an option to create multiple security settings using the Traveler database? I have multiple domains so setting a policy is not really an option for us.
    A. We have this as a requirement for a future release.

* * * * * * * * * * *
NOTE: Several requests were made for enhancements:
    • Add filtering address book functionality (corporate address book) to sync to devices.
    • Sync multiple address books, both personal and corporate.
    • Automatically check the number of devices each night and restart Traveler to accommodate the changes.
    • Sync To Do's, Journal, OOO, to mobile devices.
