TM1-ERR-0070: Unable to connect to TM1 server

Technote (troubleshooting)


Problem(Abstract)

An IBM Cognos TM1 datasource connection is configured in IBM Cognos BI. Testing the IBM Cognos TM1 connection gives the following error:

Symptom

XQE-EXE-0004 QFWBridge has returned an error:

TM1-ERR-0070 The TM1 server <admin server name>/abcde cannot be found.

IBM Cognos BI 10.2 returns these errors (query mode related):

Compatible:
TM1-ERR-0073 The TM1 server <admin server name>/abcde cannot be found.

Dynamic:
XQE-EXE-0004 QFWBridge has returned an error:
The TM1 server<admin server name>/abcde cannot be found.

Cause

A TM1 server with name 'abcde' is not known by the TM1 Administration Host.
Possible causes:
1. TM1 server 'abcde' is not started
2. Typing error in server name (TM1 connection string)
3. A TM1 server with name 'abcde' does not exist
4. On Linux/Unix : missing TM1_PATH variable in Cognos BI environment
5. DNS or 'hosts' file misconfiguration
6. A firewall blocks the TM1 server ports (admin server port, server port and client message server port)


Resolving the problem

1. Check that "TM1 Admin Server" is started.
2. Check that TM1 server 'abcde' is started and accessible from Architect/Perspectives.
3. Enter a valid server name in the IBM Cognos TM1 connection string. This should be the same string as in file tm1s.cfg (parameter 'ServerName').
4. On Linux/Unix, set environment variable TM1_PATH for Cognos BI : this should point to /bin directory of TM1 installation.
5. Add an entry in /etc/hosts file so that the Cognos BI server machine can communicate directly with the TM1 server machine (even if this is the same machine). Check that the AdminHost parameter in tm1s.cfg is using the machine name defined in the hosts file, instead of using the IP address.
6. Open required TM1 ports on your firewall(s). See TM1 installation and administration documentation for details on these ports.

6. c) ClientMessagePortNumber must be set, otherwise dynamically set. To be configured in TM1s.cfg
