How to disable FIPS when you're using Windows XP or Windows 7 system after previously enabling it through our installation.

Technote (FAQ)

Question

I installed Data collection software on Windows XP or Windows 7 operating system machine and enabled FIPS. And then later I decided to disable the FIPS option, but discovered that there is no local security policy to turn it back off. How can I disable the FIPS option without the local security policy in Windows XP home?

Answer

You need to modify a registry key to disable FIPS. Refer to this Microsoft knowledge base article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811833

Where it says this:

This security setting affects the following registry value in Windows Server 2003 and in Windows XP:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\FIPSAlgorithmPolicy

This registry value reflects the current FIPS setting. If this setting is enabled, the value is 1. If this setting is disabled, the value is 0

Note: on Windows Windows 7 machines, the registry value is located at:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\FIPSAlgorithmPolicy\Enabled
