Stop the Processor in SPSS for Windows

Technote (troubleshooting)

You are using SPSS for Windows and when you select File->Stop Processor menu item, SPSS takes a long time to respond. What is going on?

Resolving the problem

"Stop the processor" doesn't actually stop the SPSS processor until SPSS has completed the current procedure. Then, SPSS does some internal cleaning by clearing memory addresses, removing pointers to scratch files used, and prepares itself to read data again. This process can take time depending on the size of your data file and the procedure SPSS was performing when this option was selected
