IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack Versions 5.5.x and 6.1.0.0 Data Integrity Issues

Flash (Alert)

Abstract

Potential data integrity issues exist in IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack Versions 5.5.x and 6.1.0.0 that might affect some customers. Detailed information, workarounds, and the scheduled target fix are provided for these potential data integrity-related issues.

The integrity of IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack Version 6.1.0.0 Instant Restore data might be affected due to these three issues:

Issue 1: APAR IC69944 - If the Instant Restore service restarts unexpectedly, data written to the restored volume during the service restart operation might become lost.

Issue 2: APAR IC69945 - (Windows 2008 and Windows Vista only) Data written to the restored volume during an Instant Restore operation might become lost.

Issue 3: APAR IC69011- If an Instant Restore operation fails because of disk failure, no error notification is received. As a result, a loss of data occurs.

The integrity of an IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack Version 6.1.0.0 snapshot might be affected due to these two issues:

Issue 4: APAR IC69946 - During snapshot processing, a write operation fails to target the backup for the next incremental snapshot. As a result, the data integrity of subsequent incremental snapshots might be affected.

Issue 5: APAR IC70012 - Snapshots of a volume that contains a 64 K cluster size are not consistent. As a result, the data integrity of the snapshot is affected.

Content

Issue 1 APAR IC69944
Problem Summary:
When the Instant Restore service terminates unexpectedly, the restore service restarts automatically. Data written to the restored volume during this restore service restart procedure might be lost.

Who is affected?
Customers using IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack Versions 5.5.x and 6.1.0.0 whose Instant Restore service terminates unexpectedly during a restore operation.

Issue 2 APAR IC69945 (Windows 2008 and Windows Vista only)
Problem Summary:
When the following conditions occur simultaneously during an Instant Restore for a volume:
· The Instant Restore process encounters a time-out state.
· A write operation to the restored volume occurs.
The write data is not written to the disk and you do not receive a failure notification about the write operation.

Who is affected?
Customers using the Instant Restore function in IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack Versions 5.5.x or 6.1.0.0.

How do you know if you are affected?
The data on the restored volume might be affected when the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack Mount log file contains this error:

    W12.XPR MOUNT: FILTER TIMEOUT

Issue 3 APAR IC69011
Problem Summary:
The Instant Restore operation might fail to write blocks to the disk because of a disk failure. In this situation, the Instant Restore operation stops. A loss of data occurs. However, there is no indication that the write operation failed. As a result, the volume remains available even though all the data was not restored. Rebooting the system shows these volumes as not formatted.

Who is affected?
Customers using IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack Versions 5.5.x or 6.1.0.0 who encounter a disk failure during an Instant Restore operation.

How do you know if you are affected?
You are affected by a failed write operation when the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack Mount log file contains these errors:
CSPTIDiskIO::Write: write X sectors at offset Y [sectors] failed
    FBSM8033E failed to restore blocks
X and Y are the number of sectors and the offset value.

Recommendation for Issue 1, Issue 2, and Issue 3:
Use the volume restore function (instead of Instant Restore) until version 6.1.1.0 or 5.5.7 becomes available. See the Restoring volumes procedure in the Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack Installation and User's Guide Version 6.1.1.0 for information about how to use this function.

Issue 4 APAR IC69946
Problem Summary:
During snapshot processing, a write operation fails to target the backup for the next incremental snapshot. As a result, the data integrity of subsequent incremental snapshots might be affected.

Who is affected?
Customers creating incremental snapshot backups using IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack Client Versions 5.5.x or 6.1.0.x are affected.

How do you know if you are affected?
The integrity of subsequent incremental snapshots might be affected when all of these conditions exist:
· The IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack Client log file contains this error:
W10.FILTER: LogDriverState: FILTER TIMEOUT
· The next snapshot after a filter-time event is an incremental snapshot.
· An IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack Client restart has NOT occurred after the filter time-out event.

Recommendation for Issue 4:
Upgrade to the next available IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack version that contains the fix. After applying the fix, run a checkpoint snapshot to recover the lost data. After running the checkpoint snapshot, you must use the checkpoint snapshot (or subsequent snapshot) for data recovery. If you use a snapshot taken prior to the checkpoint snapshot, you are using an incomplete snapshot.

Issue 5 APAR IC70012
Problem Summary:
Volume snapshots that are formatted with a cluster size of 64 K are inconsistent. As a result, the data integrity of the snapshot is affected.

Who is affected?
Customers creating incremental snapshot backups using IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack Client Versions 5.5.x or 6.1.0.x are affected.

How do you know if you are affected?
To determine if a protected volume contains a cluster size of 64 K, follow these steps:
1. Open a command line windows (Start->Run and type cmd.exe)
2. Issue this command (where x is the drive letter of the affected volume):
    fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo x:
3. If the Bytes Per Cluster section (of the command output) contains a value of 65536, then the protected volume contains a cluster size of 64 K. As a result, the backup of this volume is inconsistent.

Recommendation for Issue 5:
You can resolve Issue 5 by completing either of these tasks:
o Upgrade to the next available IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack version that contains the fix.
o Run backup operations of the volume (that contains a 64 K cluster size) that are not content aware.
