Sametime on IBM i: Entry server shuts down during startup

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem

During server startup, a Sametime 8.5.x Entry server on IBM i shuts down with following message on the Domino server console:

"Sametime: Meeting server: child process died! Ending server. "

Cause

This error can occur on slower systems when several Java Buddy List jobs (new jobs introduced in Sametime 8.5) start up before the rest of the Community Server jobs have completed initialization.

Resolving the problem

Navigate to the Sametime server data directory, and open the meetingserver.ini file.

Look for the following section in the file:

[SOFTWARE\Lotus\Sametime\MeetingServer\Services\STPRSMGR]
Path=stprsmgr
Type=1
Enabled=1
StartOrderDependencies=Logger;ActivityProvider
RestartDependencies=
ArgString=-DDelay=30 com.ibm.sametime.buddylist <etc.>
StartWaitTime=0
StopWaitTime=0
Description=ST Presence Mgr

The DDelay setting on the ArgString line specifies the number of seconds that the Buddy List jobs should wait before starting up.

The default is 30 seconds. On particularly slow systems, this might not be long enough. Increase the value as necessary, and consider adding more memory to the system. (See "Sametime for IBM i: System Requirements", # 1092193.)
