Environment

Note: This solution is written for Oracle 9i or 10G.

Resolving the problem

1. Start SQLPlus and login to the schema that you plan to modify.

2. To see the description of the all_col_comments View type the following SQL:

SQL> desc all_col_comments;

Expected OUTPUT
Name Null? Type
----------------------------------------- -------- ----------------------------
OWNER NOT NULL VARCHAR2(30)
TABLE_NAME NOT NULL VARCHAR2(30)
COLUMN_NAME NOT NULL VARCHAR2(30)
COMMENTS VARCHAR2(4000)

3. To add comments to the column in the schema being modified type the following SQL

SQL> edit
Wrote file afiedt.buf

1* comment on column bonus.ename is 'I don''t have the faintest idea'
SQL>
/

Comment created.

SQL> select * from all_col_comments where owner = user;

OWNER TABLE_NAME COLUMN_NAME COMMENTS
---------- --------------- --------------- -------------------------------------
SCOTT BONUS ENAME I don't have the faintest idea
SCOTT BONUS JOB

4. In Framework Manager (FM), you will need to re-import the metadata to update the changes that have taken place in the database.

5. After completing the update, locate the query item and note the description property.
