WebSphere Application Server 6.1 test environment might crash in debug mode when executing SpringFramework code

Problem(Abstract)

When running the JVM of IBM WebSphere Application Server 6.1 in debug mode, the JVM crashes intermittently or shows a stack trace if you run SpringFramework code.

Cause

When a breakpoint is added, the generic signature of a class is not relocated. See also the linked APAR describing the problem.

Environment

WebSphere Application Server 6.1 installed with IBM Rational Application Developer 7.0.0.x which has not been updated manually to IBM Java SDK 1.5.0 SR5 with the WebSphere Update Installer.

Diagnosing the problem

The JVM which runs the JUnit test case in debug mode crashes intermittently or a stack trace is shown. The problem does not appear when running the JVM in normal mode.

Resolving the problem

Update the JDK used in WebSphere Application Server 6.1 test environment to IBM JDK 1.5.0 SR6. Use the link to the Java SDK update below to find the necessary files and instructions.
