Default Workspace Location Information on Windows

Troubleshooting

Problem

Where is the default workspace location information kept for WebSphere® Studio Application Developer v5.x and Rational® Application Developer v6.x on the Microsoft® Windows® platform?

Environment

Windows 2000 Advanced Server
Windows 2000 Professional
Windows 2000 Server
Windows Server 2003
Windows XP Professional

Resolving The Problem

For WebSphere Studio Application Developer v5.x on Windows, the default location of the workspace for the current user is in the system registry in registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\IBM\WebSphere Studio\Workspace
using the values "wsappdev500"' for v5.0.x and "wsapdev510" for v5.1.x. It should never be assumed the registry location for this will be the same in the different versions or editions of WebSphere Studio.

There is no concept of a fixed default workspace location in WebSphere Studio v5.x. When you install WebSphere Studio for the first time it defaults to a workspace directory in the Installation Directory in the user's <My Documents> upon first starting WebSphere Studio. The default workspace location on startup can be set in the <WSAD Install Directory>\wsappdev.ini file as follows:

  • For v5.1.x: DefaultWorkspace=<My Documents>\IBM\wsappdev51\workspace
  • For v5.0.x: DefaultWorkspace=<My Documents>\IBM\wsad\workspace

If you change this value then the most recently used workspace for a given user is saved in the previously mentioned registry keys. It is also possible to use the command line wsappdev -setworkspace option to bring up the dialogue box on startup to change it.

In the case of Rational® Application Developer (RAD) v6, a registry location is not used and the workspace location does not appear in the file <RAD v6 Install Root Directory>\IBM\Rational\SDP\6.0\rationalsdp.ini. Instead, Rational Application Developer v6 uses the config.ini file localted in the <RAD v6 Install Directory>\eclipse\configuration directory to determine where to create the default workspace directory. In this file there is an entry called osgi.instance.area.default which specifies the location of the default workspace.
Similarly for RAD v7.0, this configuration item is in <RAD v7 Install Root Directory>\IBM\SDP70\configuration\config.ini and not in <RAD v7 Install Root Directory>\IBM\SDP70\eclipse.ini.

The Rational Application Developer v6 Windows registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\IBM\Rational\Software Development Platform
does not contain any workspace information as it is all in the config.ini file.
