Error Message: In Windows Vista, sockets fail to connect to IPv6 format address (say ::1) with the following exception: "Protocol family unavailable" Stack Trace: java.net.SocketException: Protocol family unavailable at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.socketBind(Native Method) at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.bind(PlainSocketImpl.java:362) at java.net.ServerSocket.bind(ServerSocket.java:341) at java.net.ServerSocket.<init>(ServerSocket.java:208) at IPV6Accept.main(IPV6Accept.java:15) . On Windows XP when the ipv6 stack is installed and is explicitly set the java property java.net.preferIPv4Stack to false there was no exception even if the host is not in an Ipv6 network. The problem is only on Windows Vista.
Exception is thrown on Vista when we are trying to create the socket with the IPv6 address format. Exception thrown is like java.net.SocketException Protocol Family Unavailable
This defect will be fixed in: 1.4.2 SR9 (Windows IA32) 1.4.2 SR9 (Windows IA64) . when we update our codebase to include the IPv6 support for Vista, The problem went off. . To obtain the fix: Install build 20070519 or later
