In SDMC, Server Firmware Updates are a two-step process: Import the update, then install it. This document describes how to import server firmware updates or upgrades directly from the IBM Web site or, optionally, obtain the update from Fix Central. Fix Central updates can be imported using local network connections, FTP or secure copy, or by media (USB and DVD). Users can select the latest available level, the recommended level, or select a specific level. Imports can be done at any time prior to the actual update.

|Checking for updates/upgrades for a specific server
This method can be used to check for and import updates and upgrades available on the IBM web site for a specific server.
Service and Support Manager must be configured to obtain updates from the internet.
Step 1 . Collect Inventory on the server to be updated.
a) On the Welcome panel, right click the server to be updated and select Inventory, View and Collect Inventory.
b) Click Collect Inventory:
c) Under job name and schedule, leave the default of Run Now , click OK .
d) Click Display Properties to view job status:
e) Verify the job completes successfully, then click the X to close the tab:
f) Click X to close the View and Collect Inventory tab and return to the welcome screen.
Step 2. Check for updates.
a) On the Welcome panel, right click the server to be updated and select Release Management , Check for Updates...
b) Expand Power System Firmware, select the desired update or upgrade type, click Add > , then click OK
Update: An update changes the activated level but not the EC. Updates are usually concurrent, although they may contain some deferred fixes.
Upgrade: An upgrade changes the "EC level". Upgrades are always disruptive, implying that the install (not the import) must be done with all virtual servers and the host in a state of stopped.
Note: To install a specific level that may not be the latest or recommended, select All. The desired level can be selected later during the installation:
c) On the Task Launch Dialog, Confirm Run Now is selected and click OK .
d) Since this is run in the background as a “job”, click Display properties to check status of the job. Wait for the job to complete.
e). (optional) Monitor the job.
This job may take several minutes to complete.
Click the General tab to monitor completion status.
Click the Logs tab to view details of the job such as the level of firmware acquired.
After the job completes click the X to close the Active and Scheduled Jobs tab. This will return the user to the Check for Updates tab.
Step 3. (optional) Download the desired update.
Note: Manual down-load of the update files prior to performing the update is optional but recommended for disruptive updates and upgrades that have a limited time window for maintenance. This ensures that there is no disruption or delay due to external network or web site outages. To down load all required files to the SDMC prior to performing the server firmware update do the following:
a) Click Show Needed Updates to view the available update:
b) Select the desired server firmware level, click the Actions button, then Download...
Note: To download a specific level that is not "needed", click to show all available updates. "Power System Firmware - All"
must have been selected in Step 2b:
c) Click OK to confirm the download.
d) Review the readme for any special instructions.

Running the readiness check prior to the update
The server firmware readiness check is run automatically as part of a server firmware update however it can be also be run at any time to scan for potential problems that would prevent an update from occurring.
