Error description

  • REXX/CLIST variables in SP230 and above the 16 MB line are not
limited by the private region size. As a result, a REXX exec
or CLIST could potentially consume up to 2 GB of virtual storage
and adversely affect the amount of page space available for
swapping address spaces out of real storage on the system.
This could potentially lead to a WAIT03C-01.

Use of the above the line subpool 230 storage is controlled by
    the new z/OS V1R8 TSO/E user profile VARSTORAGE(HIGH/LOW)
option. Above the line storage is used when VARSTORAGE(HIGH)
is in effect. Below the line storage is used instead when the
default profile option VARSTORAGE(LOW) is in effect.

Local fix

  • Ensure the default TSO/E PROFILE VARSTORAGE(LOW) option is used.

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: REXX/CLIST variables in SP230 that      *
    * reside above the 16 MB line are not *
    * limited by region size. As a result, *
    * a REXX exec or CLIST could consume up *
    * to 2 GB of virtual storage. *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************

When the TSO/E PROFILE VARSTORAGE(HIGH) setting is active, as
opposed of the default VARSTORAGE(LOW) setting, REXX or CLIST
variables in subpool 230 can reside above the 16 MB line. REXX
or CLIST variables above the 16 MB line in SP230 are not limited
by the private region size. As a result, a REXX exec that traps
millions of bytes of authorized command output or a CLIST with
an equally large number of variables could consume up to two GB
of virtual storage. This could adversely affect the page space
available for swapping address spaces out of real storage. As
a result, a WAIT03C-01 could occur if the local page data sets
are filled by enough TSO/E users running similar REXX execs or
CLISTs with their TSO/E PROFILE VARSTORAGE(HIGH) setting active.

For reference, a WAIT03C-01 is defined as follows:

The auxiliary storage manager (ASM) found that not enough
auxiliary storage space is available for system operation:

01 The last local page is full, so there is insufficient
          local paging space.

Problem conclusion

  • REXX and CLIST variable storage above the line has been moved
from subpool 230 to subpool 130 so that it will be controlled
by the limits on user private region size. In addition,
internal control blocks have been updated to record the subpool,
and the IPCS VERBX TSODATA subcommand has been updated in both
z/OS V1R8 and z/OS V1R9 to handle the new control block format.
