Abstract

To get started with Cubing Services, you can set up a sample database, a sample cube server, and a sample cube. You can also troubleshoot the setup for Cubing Services.

Download Description

To begin

Download the Getting_Started_with_Cubing_Services_971.zip file below to your local hard drive, then unzip the file. Open the index.html file in the getstart directory.

This .zip file contains the following topics:

  • Setting up a sample database
InfoSphere Warehouse provides you with a sample DB2 database, GSDB. The GSDB database is the same sample database that is used for the Cubing Services tutorial. You must install and set up the database before you can use it to create your first OLAP project.
  • Adding the sample GO Sales and Marketing cube to the Administration Console
You can connect to the GSDB sample database with the Administration Console. After you connect to the GSDB database, you can create a sample cubeserver1 cube server, import the sample cube model and cube, and add the cube to the cube server.
    1. Connecting to the sample database with the Administration Console.
Every database that is used by a cube server must be defined within the Administration Console.
    2. Creating and starting a sample cubeserver1 cube server
After you install InfoSphere Warehouse, use the Administration Console to create and configure a cube server. You need to create at least one cube server to deploy the sample GO Sales and Marketing cube.
    3. Importing the sample CSGODW OLAP cube model in the Administration Console
You import the OLAP cube model metadata to the Administration Console by using the XML file, csgodw.xml. The csgodw.xml file contains the sample cube model and sample cube that you can use to learn more about Cubing Services.
    4. Adding the GO Sales and Marketing cube to the cube server and optimizing the cube
You need to add the sample GO Sales and Marketing cube from the CSGODW cube model to the cubeserver1 cube server. You should also optimize the GO Sales and Marketing cube.
  • Querying a sample cube by using the MDXCMD command line interface
You can run queries from the command line by using the MDXCMD utility that is provided by Cubing Services. The MDXCMD utility uses the native Cubing Services protocol or the XMLA protocol. To use the MDXCMD utility, you must first configure the utility.
  • Troubleshooting the Cubing Services setup
If you have problems querying the sample cube from the sample cube server, check for error messages in the log file of the cube server.
  • Getting the updated Cubing Services tutorial
You can use the Cubing Services tutorial to learn more about cubing, such as how to create hierarchies and dimensions, how to secure your cube, and how to create virtual cubes.
