This paper covers moving the Database Management System (DBMS) for IBM Tivoli® Provisioning Manager and IBM Tivoli Service Automation Manager Version 7 to a remote location.
The IBM Tivoli Provisioning Manager (TPM) and IBM Tivoli Service Automation Manager (TSAM) products offer capabilities for high scale enterprise management. TPM is essentially an embedded component of the TSAM solution. For both of these products, the Database Management System (DBMS) is a common component that is integral to overall product function and performance. The DBMS may either be collocated with the management server or installed on a node remote from the management server. A common approach is for a customer to install TPM or TSAM with the DBMS collocated.
Over time, based on capacity planning, production requirements, etc, the customer may decide to move the local database to a remote node. Sample situations that would drive movement of the DBMS include the inability to scale physical resources on a single server to improve system throughput (e.g. a deployment based on commodity hardware), integration with a central pool of DBMS servers (typically managed by an enterprise wide team of database administrators), etc. This paper will describe the method to move the DBMS in order to support these scenarios.
