Course Overview

Welcome to the How to Use the Hardware Management Console course! We will show you how to use the Hardware Management Console (HMC) to accomplish server and logical partition management tasks. Server maintenance and service applications are covered as well.

Course Objectives

Here's what you will learn in this course:

  • What the HMC is used for and what its user interface looks like. And since one of its main uses server management, we'll explain some server management concepts.

  • How to install and configure HMC hardware and software. We'll show you how to do a new, "from-scratch" software install, and also how to install the HMC over an existing system build.

  • How to use the HMC's GUI to create and manage logical partitions (LPARs) and partition profiles, and carry out dynamic logical partitioning (DLPAR) operations.

  • How to manage Capacity on Demand resources.
  • How to set system manager security.
  • How to access the HMC's service applications.

Audience

All parts of this course are directed toward IBM System Service Representatives (SSRs) and customers. Because the level of participation of SSRs and customers typically varies depending on the server model, the information contained in these areas is made available to whoever needs it.

Prerequisites

A basic understanding of Web site navigation is all you need. No prior knowledge of an HMC is assumed.
