IBM SmartCamp Istanbul is an exclusive regional event bringing together the best of the best startups who are developing business ventures that align with the IBM Smarter Planet vision from across Asia, Central Eastern Europe, Middle East, and Africa.

The event was held in Istanbul, Turkey, and gathered leading venture capitalists, industry experts, journalists, serial entrepreneurs, startup support organizations, and academics to network and celebrate entrepreneurship.

The Istanbul event featured eight startups from across Asia, Central Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Three of the eight startups were selected as semi-finalists and will go on to compete with startups from across the world in the SmartCamp Global Finals event in San Francisco, California, 4-6 Feb 2014.

Guest keynote: Plamen Russev

Plamen Russev, Chairman of Webit; Chairman of the Board, eAcademy; Serial entrepreneur, investor, author and public speaker

Plamen is an experienced consultant on Central Europe's digital agenda with more than 17 years experience in marketing, advertising, public relations, and IT. He is dedicated to developing and raising the awareness towards the digital industry in Central and Eastern Europe by educating the markets and organizing the biggest industry events.

He is a member of the Consultative Committee at the Ministry of Transport, Information Technologies and Communications in Bulgaria. Plamen is also member of a number of international academic, IT, marketing and non-profit organizations, and trade associations, and he is frequently speaking and moderating conferences. Plamen is well known as the founder and organizer of the popular Webit events.
