A growing number of companies are finding that Social Software complement and extend conventional collaboration and communication platforms focused on e-mail, custom tools, and intranets by providing new, flexible, and informal ways for employees to interact and share information. Social Software fosters networks that drive COLLABORATION and therefore INNOVATION.
IBM Social Software :
How to drive adoption of IBM Connections ?
How to enable people to connect with people ?
The value of social software increases exponentially when people can connect to their social networks at anytime, from anywhere and easily....
Social Networking is mainly based on the network you have created inside your organization. The question is : How could you easily build your network ? Your network must have be important in order to spread your ideas and be inform about your colleagues' publications.
Repeated studies have shown that the longer a project team stays together without significant changes in its composition, the less likely it is to come up with ideas that lead to innovations. So, it's important to have your direct colleagues in your social network, but someone in a different specialty is also important (« Weak ties are strong »). You can meet him in a meeting or at the coffee machine..
Imagine you could use your mobile or a specific device ? Simply by shaking your phones or a specific device you can add him to your network, in order to keep a track of him...
Using your mobile :
Via an app, you could imagine to connect with someone. By leveraging geolocation capabilities of mobile, we can recognize someone near you and send him an invitation.
Screenshot of a mockup :
Initial screen of the application :
After shaking near someone :
Introduction of the architectural concept :
To validate the feasibility, we have designed a mockup based on a J2EE Application. The web application send your location (longitude & latitude) to the server. If two location are received at the same time, the app will send an "IBM Connections" invitation to both, using the IBM Connections invitation APIs. In that mockup, the Web App uses HTML5 Geolocation API.
Using specific device : Poken
During an event, I met someone from the company Poken. Poken has developped a small device which allow you share your social business card. I have instantly imagined the use of that technology for internal social platform in conjunction with IBM Connections.
High level overview of the architecture :
Imagine that technology during a event to leverage IBM Connections during a two-day customer event...
The success of an event can be measured by the number of significant connections established between participants; new professional contacts, new business partnerships, new leads. That device are also ice breakers and conversation starters. You could even imagine to brand your poken. IBM has already used that technology during customer's events.
NFC Technology :
Near field communication, or NFC, will allow for simplified transactions, data exchange, and wireless connections between two devices in close proximity to each other, usually by no more than a few centimeters. t is expected to become a widely used system for making payments by smartphone, but I'm sure we will see a democratization of that technology to support social networking platform.
An idea coming from Romain Lienard & Vincent Perrin.

IBM has long had a vision that the value of social software increases exponentially when people can connect to their social networks at anytime and from anywhere.
The IBM Connections mobile applications is available on the Apple app store. Details about that application are available on that entry of this blog.
But, two business partners have also developed native applications for iPhone : mLinked & iWildfire.
mLinked and mLinked Free are native iPhone applications to communicate with your public or corporate social network based on IBM Lotus Connections.
mLinked Free features
Same features as mLinked pre-configured for Bleedyellow, My DeveloperWorks and Lotus Greenhouse
iWildFire is your feature rich IBM Connections App for iPhone and iPad.

I strongly encourage to test these applications... They will definitely bring value to your IBM Connections environment.

A Social Business isn't just a company that has a Facebook page and a Twitter account. A Social Business is one that embraces and cultivates a spirit of collaboration and community throughout its organization—both internally and externally.
IBM has identified three distinct characteristics of a Social Business:
But, what are the key factors to drive a good adoption of Social Business ?

Do you know that you can create your own widgets in Lotus Notes, in a few minutes only and without using any programming language ?
The Widget Wizard let you create widget gathering data from a web page, a notes document, a google gadget or a RSS feed very easily.
All you have to do is follow the step-by-step wizard then click on the finish button.
These widgets can be displayed on the sidebar (useful for a permanent use) or in a tab or a popup (very useful for contextual widgets that you want to display on particular events)
Every widget can take its parameter input (if they need it) from a user input or from a live text expression :
Live Text expression, another cool feature from Lotus Notes, is a Regular Expression (regexp) engine which let you create your own datatypes (ie. address or phone number) that you map to a widget when the expression is found in a mail or anything else running through Notes (such an application)
Scenario : you open a new mail, it's a meeting. The address is automagically detected by Live Text engine, and with a simple click on it, you can see where is it, how to go there with your car, or by train, and if you'll need to take your umbrella or not.
Yes, this is possible in a few minutes. All you have to know is the basics of regular expressions (which can be a real pain if you read them for the first time, although they're in fact really easy to write). And if you don't want to create your own widgets, there's still a lot of widgets available on the internet ! Find more info about regexp via your favorite search engine, or by following this link (video tutorials) : Regular Expressions for dummies
See below a short demo (8 minutes) on how to do a GoogleMaps and Meteo integration with Notes

My colleague just asked me to develop a button in Notes mail in order to easily follow a community.
IBM Connections API can be used with Lotus Notes and its LotusScript programming language in order to facilitate some tasks for end users.
So with some Notes support from Herbert Hilhorst, I wrote a piece of LotusScript that automatically follows a community with a simple click. The authentication is done directly in the Notes client
All you have to do is :
1 - create a button in your mail, via Create>Hotspot>Button.
2 - Specify a label for your button, select LotusScript instead of Formula
3 - Copy & paste this code, after changing the CommunityUID (here it's 5bf86449-cd87-4e02-bef5-a24f24408723) according to your needs :
Sub Click(Source As Button)
Save your document, click on the button, and voila !

Genesys UC Connect facilitates the integration of Genesys Customer Interaction Management (CIM) software platform with Lotus Sametime. The integration helps bring knowledge workers from diverse departments and the back office together into the contact center process flow on a part-time basis without formally becoming a customer service agent. It does this by intelligently routing calls based on presence, dynamic location awareness (provided by Lotus Sametime), plus a host of intelligent routing controls the Genesys software provides.
Genesys UC Connect for IBM Sametime “subscribes” to presence provided by IBM Sametime to determine the availability or location of experts, and back office and branch office workers. Genesys UC Connect for IBM Sametime enables contact centers to leverage universal employee access — the ability to extend the resource pool to encompass any agent or expert — to enable branch employees, back office employees, and expert agents, regardless of their location, to efficiently manage their time and resources.
Detailled presentation of Genesys UCConnect for Sametime : link
Genesys Product Team has created a community on Lotus Greenhouse. The focus of this community is on business objectives, methods and technical means for extending customer service beyond the traditional contact center. Utilizing Unified Communications and Social Enterprise along with bleeding edge Contact Center solutions allows anyone in a company to become part of the customer experience.
You can download a click-to-through demo of Genesys UCConnect for IBM Sametime.

A shift is occurring in the enterprise. The adoption of mobile devices and social software is rapidly becoming a vital business tool, enabling organizations to transform virtually every part of their business operations from marketing, customer service and sales, to product development and human resources.
Social networking has had a profound effect on society. Couple this with the explosion of mobile devices and new Cloud delivery models, a perfect storm of industry trends is merging that makes this the right time to move from the hands of teens to business.
Consider these facts:
IBM has delivered a new social netorking app.
Available at no charge, the new IBM Connections app works just like the industry-leading IBM social software with added functionality for Google Android smartphones and tablets, Apple iOS devices and BlackBerry smartphones. In addition to the popular File share application, Profiles, and Activities, Blogs and generate-and-vote-on-ideas features, workers can now take photos with their smartphones and upload them directly to Connections. All three apps are available now in the respective apps stores.
