Last Monday, EMC announced ViPR as its new Software-defined Storage platform. Almost simultaneously, Chuck Hollis described it as ‘Breathtaking’ in his usually excellent blog. I must admit, one thing I routinely find breathtaking about EMC is their approach to marketing. They have a knack for being able to take unexceptional technology (or, as in this case, combinations of technology and theories about the future), and spin an extraordinarily compelling story. With all seriousness and without tongue in cheek… Nicely done EMC! Read more.

As I’ve been working with many members of the Tivoli Storage team to coordinate our involvement at IBM Edge 2013 and as the conference nears it struck me the other day -- Edge really does have something for everyone. While the historical focus of this event has been storage—and storage content remains particularly strong—this year, IBM is expanding that focus to address related areas of IT optimization as well: cloud, smart analytics and big data, business continuity, and many more.

Server virtualization and storage virtualization go hand in hand. Centralized, virtualized storage is crucial for advanced server virtualization to be flexible and easy to manage. Companies are realizing that to unleash the real potential of cloud agile infrastructure, storage virtualization has to become mainstream like server virtualization.
For many companies, there is a constant need for additional storage resources to support growing volumes of information. And if you don’t focus on managing your storage infrastructure, you can find that one virtual server is running out of storage capacity, even while there is ample capacity in other parts of the network.
With storage virtualization, companies now can make better use of existing investments in disk capacity and can often postpone the need to purchase additional capacity. As storage becomes virtualized, it becomes easier to manage and helps companies to adapt to business needs much faster. And not to forget, it actually costs less!

In the second half of 2009 the International Technology Group (ITG) was contracted to do a detailed analysis of IBM and competitive storage offerings for SAP to determine a three year total cost of ownership (TCO) for each product included in the comparison. ITG developed two comparisons one for Large Enterprist accounts and a second for Midmarket accounts and chose approppriate competitive offerings for the comparisons. For the Large Enterprise accounts ITG includes: EMC V-Max systems vs. IBM DS8000 Systems and HP XP2400 vs. IBM XIV Systems. For the Midmarket accounts ITG includes: HP Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA) vs. IBM DS5000 Systems and HP EVA vs. IBM XIV Systems. ITG developed three year TCO comparisons and provided IBM an Executive summary and Detailed analysis report that can be share with customers.
Read the outcome of the analysis:

ITG also participated in a Webcast that is available for replay discussing the results of their studies of comparative disk systems cost for SAP environments in large and midsized organizations.
