IBM positioned in the leader’s quadrant for Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) of the Gartner MQ report
The 2014 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Backup Software and Integrated Appliances report, released on June 16, 2014, included the following important findings identifying shifts occurring in data backup requirements:
By 2018, 40% of organizations will augment with additional products or replace their current backup application
Through 2015, despite the rise of disk-to-disk (D2D), disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T) backup will remain the predominant strategy for large enterprises
By 2017, 70% of organizations will have replaced their remote-office tape backup with a disk-based backup solution that incorporates replication, up from 30% today
By 2018, the number of organizations abandoning tape for backup will double, whereas archiving to tape will increase by 25%
By 2016, less than 30% of all big data will be backed up
The Tivoli Storage Manager family fits neatly to fulfill all the above. It is one of the most popular enterprise backup and recovery software products in the world. It is proven to enable unmatched efficiency, simplicity and scalability for virtual, physical and cloud backup environments of all sizes in a cost effective manner, making it an essential ingredient for your enterprise to sustain a competitive advantage.
IBM Tivoli Storage Manager can manage backup and archive data across disk arrays, tape libraries or optical storage and can automatically move data as it ages to lower performance storage. Policies can specify retention time, type of storage media, frequency of backup, data type and hardware to be backed up.
IBM TSM uses a progressive incremental, or "incremental forever" backup scheme to collect backup data. The software takes an initial full backup and all subsequent backups are incremental - that is, only changes to data are backed up.
Tivoli Storage Manager can be configured many different ways to meet your organization's needs. IBM TSM is supported on a variety of hardware, including AIX, HP-UX, Linux, Solaris, and Windows Server. TSM's backup client is available for most supported versions of major operating systems.
IBM TSM is also placed this year in the Leader’s quadrant in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Backup Software and Integrated Appliances report:

The game-changing benefits of choosing TSM over other backup solutions include:
Savings up to 38% in backup infrastructure costs by switching to IBM TSM*1
TSM deduplication and incremental ‘forever’, working together, can save up to 95% storage space*2.
Supports all client data movement methods - disk-to-disk (D2D) and disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T)
TSM backups can be managed from TSM Operations Center or VMware® vCenter. TSM Operations Center delivers breakthrough visibility and consolidates multiple TSM servers for simpler administration of large environments
TSM Family offerings enable near instant recovery for virtual machines, Linux and Windows servers, and Windows workstations. Recovers individual files from VMware snapshot backups in less than 2 minutes.*3
TSM has been reliably protecting client data for 20 years and is a major market share player in enterprise backup software
TSM enables high-speed, policy-based disaster recovery and business continuity
TSM servers can manage billions of objects each, so there is less disruption and complexity as backup workloads grow, which they inevitably do
TSM includes robust remote site replication that supports large workloads
TSM FlashCopy Manager (FCM) can back up 500 VMware images in 15 minutes; and 1000 in 36 minutes.*4
