As part of IBM’s Mainframe50 launch, some of you may remember that IBM announced a new Enterprise Cloud System (ECS) Solution. In developing IBM Enterprise Cloud System, the goal was to respond to customers’ needs to have enterprise offerings for the mainframe . Our goal was to help clients and service providers reduce the cost of operations. IBM wanted to provide our customers with a way to rapidly deploy trusted cloud services with mainframe technology. Specifically, the ECS offering was designed to help Managed Service Providers (MSPS) deliver flexibility and performance to their clients via a “Pay as you Grow Model.” Pay As You Grow allows matching of costs and revenue streams and therefore greater flexibility and profitability. With the “Pay as You Grow” model Managed Service Providers pay based on their actual usage and no “up front” capital costs are required. With this model, customers can manage their costs and scale up when they need to based upon their growth. This consumption-based approach allows an MSP to focus on building their business rather than on the cost of their infrastructure.
Last week IBM announced that the Enterprise Cloud System is now generally available to all clients. The new solution offers convenient “one stop shopping” to IBM customers by offering System z hardware, IBM storage and IBM cloud management software into a single factory integrated IaaS solution. The bottom line is that with this new offering the benefits of mainframe technology -- high performance and reliability -- are now merged with the flexibility of the cloud to support mission critical workloads
So how are IBM customers using the new solution? Vissensa, a UK-based managed service provider (MSP), is using the IBM Enterprise Cloud System, to enhance the cloud services they are able to deliver to customers. The zEnterprise Cloud Solution provides Vissensa with huge amounts of ultra-reliable computing that can, for example, enables their organization to quickly provide pre-configured, pre-tested Linux platforms which outperform X86 based cloud infrastructure. This capability is seen as increasingly important to IBM clients who are adopting multi-hypervisor operating systems and technologies and incorporating technology shifts like Open Stack within their solutions to reduce costs and increase performance. With the IBM Enterprise Cloud System , Vissensa can extend its capabilities by offering a neutral platform to their clients. In plain English, that means this extends Vissensa’s cloud services to support any aspect of software and service deployment regardless of size, complexity, security, performance and flexibility. This is a powerful combination, allowing Vissensa to scale up quickly to meet their clients changing requirements. In talking with Vissensa executives, it’s clear that the zEnterprise Cloud Solution is offering their organization a cost-effective means to provide service to their customers---extending the benefits of the mainframe to the cloud environment.
"The zEnterprise platform offers better scalability with the most powerful processors of any server, the highest levels of availability you can get, and with better price/performance than legacy x86 hardware,” notes Steve Groom, CEO of Vissensa. “It means we can offer a new level of service, with even better security and lower the total cost of ownership for our clients."
For MSPs looking for a cost-effective solution, IBM offers the “IBM MSP Utility Pricing for System z” pricing model. Delivered through IBM Global Financing, this model provides consumption-based pricing designed especially to make cloud technologies more widely accessible to Managed Service Providers (MSPs).
