A great first day at Innovate 2013. This is my second Innovate, and this year I am enjoying seeing old friends and meeting new folks as always. Arrived on Sunday to a little more heat than I left behind in Nebraska - HA!
I enjoyed meeting teammates from Italy, France, Brazil, UK, at the country reception, then went on to the exhibit room floor where lots of customers interested in System z application development, testing and monitoring. This morning was an excellent kickoff by Kristof and the senior leadership team along with customer Steve Farley, VP of Application Development, from Nationwide talking about how much they have gained by implementing a process of continuous software delivery.
The pace of change is what affects us most these days, in our personal lives as well as in the software development field. In the old days (like a few years ago) :-) software development and test was very linear. You developed an app for a few months, then you tested it for a few more. But with the technology disrupters of the present (Mobile, Social, Cloud and Big Data) and the increasing demands for responsiveness from customers, software build, test, release and deployment needs to be lean and agile so that coders can focus on software delivery (which they love) without the overhead. The general session also focused on IBM's latest acquisition of UrbanCode which completes the "Release and Deploy" entry point for the DevOps solution. This best in class software has helped our customers see huge increases in overall productivity and quality. Will be anxious to get to the z track sessions this afternoon to hear more from customers about specific ways they have implemented facets of this DevOps approach!
