Day 2 rocked with local band Yellow Brick Road kicking off the start of a info packed general session ..
Steve Mills recapped to the attendees on the latest from the Mainframe 50th anniversary - highlighting that Infrastructure matters !
As he said - the mainframe has been around for a long time - and it will stay around. As business are needing to make choices and embrace the opportunities the sheer transactional reliability and performance needed to embrace and leverage Big Data Analytics, Cloud , Mobile and the Internet of things is all there on System z.
Customer can make use of whats there as their needs and infrastructure evolves - and perhaps think of their mainframe as a super computer - giving mobile applications direct access, Cloud and more .
I have spent the majority of my IBM career in the mainframe space - and I may be slightly biased - but it is really encouraging to hear senior IBM executives being open as to the real value that System z has to us and to our clients .
After the opening session , I spent some time talking to some of peers in other product business areas for System z software .
Sandy Sherrill, Worldwide Market Manager for IMS, shared that the IMS Team attending Impact (4 years now) loves the dialogues they have with clients @ Impact.
She told me that many of their clients know that IMS is "that database on System z we use," but they don't have much exposure to it in their roles. Their interest swiftly grows as they learn about all of the integration points IMS has with different WebSphere products. Enterprise Architects from State Farm, Scotiabank, and American Express participated in a panel discussion with IMS On Demand Architect Shyh-Mei Ho to talk about how each of them leverages WebSphere DataPower for their cloud and mobile initiatives. Phil Noplos from AmEx shared that 85% of transactions worldwide are still paid in cash!
A clear message that resonated from these architects was that DataPower can help reduce MIPs. IMS also just announced that its IMS Mobile Feature Pack leverages WebSphere Liberty Profile's z/OS Connect. At the IMS ped in the System z zone, Jenny Hung and Josh Newell shared how IMS Mobile can supplement clients' existing roll-your-own mobile solutions, as well as mobile solutions that use either IBM Worklight, or IBM WebSphere DataPower, or both.
She ended capturing on the points that Steve made in the opening session , infrastructure matters, and the IMS team hears from the Impact attendees how IMS is integral to their infrastructure. State Farm shared in another session how WebSphere DataPower is helping them grow their business and drive effectiveness in the cloud, enabling access to IMS assets all the way.
Its been another great day @Impact - and I am looking forward to Day 3 tomorrow
