Interview by Megan Moyer, Marketing Manager for System z Software Marketing with IOD veteran Jim Reed, System z Software Marketing Manager for Information Management
In a few days, I'm headed to the Information on Demand (IOD 2012) event for the first time in my career. I'm excited and a little overwhelmed by the depth and breadth of all the sessions and activities on the IOD 2012 website.
So to help me out, I decided to get the inside scoop from a fellow IBMer who has attended IOD more than a few times. The following are the questions I asked - Jim Reed, System z Software Marketing Manager for Information Management. He'll be there again this year with his extended team.
Jim: Certainly. I'm part of the Information Management group, responsible for our System z product portfolio - which includes everything from DB2 & IMS Tools, warehousing, Cognos, analytics, Optim, InfoSphere, Guardium products. If it runs on z, my team is responsible for it. Our responsibility is Product Management & Product Marketing for the portfolio. This will be my sixth year working at IOD.
Megan: How would you advise a new attendee about where to find the specific information management System z activities?
Jim: The conference is broken up into about twelve tracks in total. We have over 200 System z activities spread across all those tracks - which can be pretty daunting. The common question is, how do I know where all these will take place? We have a couple of ways to make it easy.Megan: That's great. Another question is for both new attendees and for people who have been to IOD before. What are the things not to miss this year?
1) We have an online link dedicated to only the System z Information Management sessions and
Jim: Yes, one of the things we do every year is to look at the session feedback and "lesson's learned" from IOD and other conferences throughout the year. We bring all the distinguished engineers, STSM's and IBM Fellows from the lab because people always want to hear from them. We also have several new sessions that we added this year. I'll list a few of those here:
Highlight of a few new sessions
Megan: Besides sessions, what else should attendees not miss?
Jim: The Expo is a great place to take a tour through the Solution Center. We'll have the new System z EC12 machine live on the show floor. We'll have the brand new DB2 Analytics Accelerator version 3 running live and several of our team will be there showing off the latest solutions and products we have. If anyone wants a drill down, we can schedule appointments with technical experts in a more private setting to talk through the capabilities in more detail. And, there's also a DB2 10 book signing on Monday with Don Haderle - the father of DB2 - and Surekha Parekh. Her blog article about the book gives a good overview, if you're interested in that.
Megan: Are there any final thoughts about IOD you want everyone to know?
Jim: Yes. The last things are to tell everyone to bring your System z pin (that you can get at the Expo or from meeting and appointments) and conference pass to get into the exclusive System z customer event called "Rock the Mainframe" at the House of Blues on Wednesday night from 7:30 pm to 10:00 pm. It will be hosted by Phil Weintraub and Dan Wardman. It's a great place to catch up with people on the team and have some fun.
And finally, we're very excited and proud that IOD has turned into the largest System z Software event in the world. From the number of people attending to the number of technical and leadership sessions, hands-on labs, over 40 sessions presented by customers, "Ask the Experts", "Birds of a Feather", Roundtable activities and the Expo, there are so many ways for attendees to engage.
Megan: Thanks Jim. Hopefully we'll get attendees to ask questions and comments here on the Mainframe Insights blog if there's something in particular they are looking for what we didn't cover. See you soon in Vegas at IOD!
