By Sherri Hanna,
Rational WW Go to Market Manager .
Tuesday night was the System z client reception. Had a wonderful time at Il Mulino in the Swan hotel. I enjoyed meeting many customers and WW IBMrs and partners as we enjoyed some great food and drink. We tried the special z cocktail - zRock - as Phil Weintraub, zSoftware North America VP welcomed client guests and other IBM executives.
Wednesday was a full day of sessions focused around the themes of Collaborative development, Continuous Integration, and new optimizing compilers. A hugely attended session was with Ed Weare of State Street Bank talking about their experience converting Legacy Change Management Infrastructure to RTC on System z. The main messages were....this takes time, start in small steps if you can; technical tips and gotcha's; and why this was all worth the effort. After lunch I attended a session on the new COBOL compiler - a language that is as vibrant today as ever and one which is now optimized to take advantage of new hardware and technologies (eg Mobile, Cloud, etc). Lots of strong business partner sessions as well, including a customer/BP session on Rational Development and Test Environment. For those of you who may not know what RD&T is, it is a solution that allows you to do testing on your INTEL server without using mainframe Mips prompting the phrase "a mainframe for every developer" :-).

At night, another chance to experience Orlando at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Dodging raindrops we rode Mt Everest, listened to the band at the Tusker restaurant and enjoyed the evening and good company.
Today at Innovate, the z tracks are wrapping up with sessions on CIz, RTC and Java on the mainframe. It has been a rewarding several days and assuming the tropical storm Andrea lets up, we will all arrive safely at our homes tonight anxious to put into practice the knowledge, tips and tricks we've learned over the last few days. Ciao and thanks to everyone for making this such a great week!
