Because it can hide complicated platform specifics, the appliance concept is a particularly good fit for System z. For example, you may not have z/OS administration and system programming skills available, but still want to exploit the value provided by an integrated z/OS stack — such as tight integration of platform hardware and firmware and advanced security and availability characteristics.
To evaluate the technology and its potential benefits, the IBM Systems Optimization Competency Center (SOCC) built a fully functional prototype of a simple appliance that could be automatically deployed and managed without any system-specific skills for installation, configuration and management. This prototype made it clear that the approach would represent a radical simplification step and could provide high value to clients.
Subsequently, through close collaboration with the IBM System z firmware team and the IBM WebSphere development team, the SOCC created an appliance foundation for the System z platform, which provides the basis for a number of important firmware features, including the unique IBM zAware feature introduced with the zEnterprise EC12. For more information check out the IBM zAware blog series.
Going forward, the appliance foundation will enable new types of applications on the System z platform. Not only will the resulting appliances provide new features, but they will minimize the associated operational requirements and costs, allowing clients to derive maximum value.
