Big data is called big data because it covers ALL data - beyond what each of us may focus on in our particular roles. It covers from the rich, highly structured data in databases and data warehouses to machine-to-machine / sensor generated data, emails, social media sites, documents and beyond; in short, any data relevant to your organization that can help deliver better business outcomes and competitive advantage. That implies all this data needs to integrate transparently between the different domains. So where does the mainframe fit with big data?
Think about it:... organizations have made huge investments in their computing platforms as they hold mission critical transaction data sources. These OLTP platforms have become the foundation of today's modern analytics—so much so that many organizations have co-located their data warehouses with this data to reduce latency of updates, make best use of scarce resources, enjoy the same high qualities of service of the transactional data, and more. Organizations have also co-located their business analytics applications like Cognos BI, SPSS predictive analytics and QMF for the same reasons with high availability access from anywhere - like mobile apps. Until recently the industry has been focused on the bignessof big data, particularly volume and velocity factors which the mainframe has always excelled in. But the vast variety of data helps provide greater understanding - it helps us get smarter. Integration between this diverse set of sources and technologies like Hadoop are enabling customers to augment their business analytics solutions - ultimately providing deeper insights in to their business, customers' needs and next moves.
