Announcing the 2013 Master the Mainframe contest

I'm excited to announce the North America 2013 Master the Mainframe contest begins October 7th. We are in the opening days of enrollment and we already have some 200 schools registered. Last year, we had 4,682 students in the US/Canada contest, our eighth consecutive year of growth. I'll bet you didn't know that since its inception in 2005, the contest has run in 33 countries, with more than 59,000 high school and college students participating. What a great way to bring the next generation of IT professionals into the world of enterprise computing!
Designed to attract new students to the platform, the contest is built for “no experience necessary.” Contestants begin by learning how to log on to a mainframe, following screen shots that walk them through what might be an unfamiliar new world (75 percent of last year’s contestants reported that the contest was their first hands-on experience with a mainframe). While gaining real-world skills, students will be introduced to the vital role that the mainframe plays in mobile, cloud, and analytics, and they'll learn about our recent integration with the OpenStack cloud computing framework. Students who progress through the first two parts of the contest will also gain hands-on experience with four operating systems: z/OS, Linux on System z (first time ever!), z/TPF and z/VM. Those who go on to Part 3 will have the opportunity to access Rational Developer for System z in the cloud.

Deon Newman is Vice President, Marketing for IBM System z. He is responsible for worldwide brand management and marketing strategy to develop the position of the System z brand in the market, drive global awareness, interest, and demand. Previously, Mr. Newman served as Vice President, Marketing and Communications, IBM Systems & Technology Group, North America, responsible for driving the North America marketplace leadership and results of the IBM Systems portfolio, marketing strategy and execution. Prior to that, he served as the Worldwide Marketing Director for SOA and IBM WebSphere and as the Worldwide Director of Sales and Marketing for System z Software. Deon joined IBM in 1991 in Melbourne, Australia, and during his IBM career, has held a number of marketing and sales leadership positions across Asia, Europe, the U.S. as well as in a worldwide capacity.
