This week's IBM Collaboration Solutions community webcast was filled with excitement as 2,000 participants joined in to watch Ed Brill, director of Social Business and Collaboration Solutions, announce the new IBM Notes Domino Social Edition Public Beta program (beginning December 14th). Scott Souder, program director for Notes, iNotes and IBM Connections Mail, gave a fun and engaging demo of a several new product features. And a few customers and partners shared their experiences with Notes/Domino as well as their company's social business transformation. Many thanks to Eric Petersen of the Salvation Army, Lance Spellman of Workflow Studios, and Daniel Lieber of IIUI for adding so much to the broadcast!
We followed the video broadcast with our regular monthly community meeting where participants were encouraged to ask the product team questions via the web chat or phone. We gathered over 200 questions and will be posting answers in the ICS community in Greenhouse next week. Bruce Elgort was our community member spotlight this month, and Sandra Marcus gave us a rundown of what's planned for IBM Connect in January. Unfortunately, she didn't slip and tell us who the opening general session guest speaker will be, but I'll keep trying to get it out of her. :-)
One topic that that was raised during the call was the product naming scheme. Ed Brill addressed the question, and also explains on his blog like this:
A version number increment is designed to do several things: create buzz in the market, including awareness from the industry press and analysts who might not pay attention to a "mod" point release; convey vendor confidence in the product and its value; indicate longevity of the product; and signal the delta in new features and capabilities. Thus, it only makes sense to call a version that adds embedded experiences, a modernized user interface, new mail and calendar features, the Notes browser plug-in, SAML support, Traveler support on System i server, new XPages features, and more.... 9.0.

I hope you'll join us for next month's community meeting which will be held early in the month, on December 11th. We'll have members of the IBM SmartCloud for Social Business team join us to talk about the Q4 portfolio update. Members of the ICS community will receive an invitation to the meeting. You can also watch this blog, our Twitter account or Facebook page for details on how to register for the webcast.
