Social Business is an exciting new paradigm for many businesses; for others, it’s been there all along.
Take healthcare, for example. Healthcare organizations are by definition social; their success is measured by their ability to connect, engage and impact patients, caregivers and family members.
Making these connections is getting more and more difficult. Medical science and associated technologies are accelerating while economic models force medical staff to spend less and less “quality time” with patients and in keeping up with medical advances. Medical professionals have to do more – and learn more – in less time.
It’s no surprise then that healthcare is a hotbed of social business innovation, especially around the application of video technology as a tool for knowledge transfer. Video is a very rich form of social content, and this makes it an ideal tool for sharing complex concepts and nuanced meaning. If a picture paints a thousand words, a video paints a million.
Video enables medical staff to accelerate learning and expand the reach of their care. Here are two examples:
New York Presbyterian Hospital
Eoin Dawson shared with us how his hospital is implementing video in conjunction with their learning management system. From medical refresher courses to regulatory-driven training, video is being instituted as an infrastructure, accessible across the organization.
Boston Children’s Hospital
The hospital is partnering with IBM on OPENPediatrics, an initiative to equip doctors and nurses far and wide to treat critically ill children. They are using social technologies including video to multiply and spread expertise like a virus.
David Bornstein from the Wall Street Journal calls it demonopolizing knowledge; at Qumu we talk about how video platforms democratize video. It’s all part of the same significant change in communications technology for organizations of all kinds: using video to vastly multiply the ability to spread what’s in experts’ brains and leaders’ hearts.
Whether an organization is adopting social business concepts for the first time or, as with healthcare, have it in their organizational DNA – video is a powerful tool to accelerate the process.
Video makes Social real.
