For Graham Kittle, his first-ever People for a Smarter Planet Facebook chat was more like a day-long adventure race. For 16 hours Graham, who was recently featured in the IBM Smarter Planet ad for Social Business, hosted a discussion around the value of creating a smarter workforce via social. While his morning began before sunrise in a coffee shop near Sydney, Australia – followed by a hot cup coffee all over his lap!, he was soon in a taxi on his way to an IDC analyst breakfast – where he managed to continue the conversation along the way, sharing key insights when he could.
Early in the discussion, Graham posted this topic:
“IBM's CEO, Ginni Rometty, in a recent speech, said: “Understand the social network not as your new water cooler, but as your new production line.” Do you agree? Have you added social to your organization in some manner? If so, How has it been going? If not, why haven't you tried it out?
Judging by the responses, it seems many think education is the key to successfully introducing social into an organization.
A recurring topic throughout the conversation was culture change. Chat participants shared different examples of how companies are becoming social businesses and seeing valuable results.
Oddly enough, even after 16 hours on the topic of social, Graham believes the conversation is far from over. The potential of social is tremendous, but it relies on good discussions like these and collaboration. But perhaps, Graham admitted, that conversation could continue - after a little bit of sleep.
