Having the option to stay in my pajamas all day, saving money on breakfast and lunch by cooking eggs for every meal, not to mention the daily commute of 20 steps from my bed to my desk – I love working remotely from home. At least that’s what I thought until reading IBM’s recently released CEO insights from the Global C-Suite Study, entitled Reinventing the Rules of Engagement. Upon finishing the last page of the PDF I immediately packed up my laptop, charger, and notebook and headed to IBM’s mobile office center.
Why would one go through the trouble of getting dressed, looking presentable and taking (gasp!) public transportation to end up sitting in a cubicle? Because if IBM’s Global C-Suite study’s findings are true then success is all about collaboration, going outside your physical and digital boundaries, and constantly putting yourself in a position to learn from others.
The first step I have taken is moving my workspace to the mobile office so that I can speak to those around me about what they are working on and what things outside of our industry they have found interesting lately. It’s only been two days of my new way of working and I have already downloaded three new apps and made purchases from two different e-commerce sites I hadn’t known about before.
I have started my second step which has been speaking to my parents, siblings, and friends outside my industry about innovation in their workplaces and what trends they’ve seen arising lately.
My next step, which I haven’t yet started, will be to go out and speak to my younger cousins about what they have been learning in school recently and how they’ve been spending their spare time. I’m hoping that this will help me get an idea of what’s cool these days with younger consumers.
If there’s one thing I learned from reading IBM’s recently released CEO insights from the Global C-Suite Study, entitled Reinventing the Rules of Engagement it’s that you must look outside in order to innovate within. It’s one thing to sit at home and read articles about what is happening in different industries, but it’s far better to hear it from the people who are experiencing the next big thing right now.
