Remember the scene from Office Space, where three employees take the always malfunctioning printer out to a field and break it into pieces? These days, a faulty printer isn’t typically the bane of our work lives. But I’m willing to bet that email might be.
The ways we use email in the workplace have changed. The IDC white paper, Improving Collaboration by Adding Social Capabilities to Email, discusses these shifts in great detail and points out that we’ve pushed the boundaries of email beyond simple communication into many other activities: file sharing, peer-to-peer or team collaboration, project coordination, organization announcements, collecting feedback and more. We’ve asked email to do more than it can comfortably manage.
Now opening our inboxes feels like encountering a crazy uncle at holiday dinners: we cringe and endure it.
It’s time to rethink the ways we communicate in the workplace. While email remains relevant, it’s often not the most efficient way of sharing information—in fact, social collaboration tools serve as an excellent complement to email’s main capabilities. Download the white paper and find out how email can integrate with social collaboration tools to evolve communications and increase productivity in the workplace.
For example, email systems can go social by including:
1. Employee social networks to maintain and share profile information
2. File- and knowledge-sharing sites
3. Wikis for group collaborative content creation
4. Blogs for sharing content
5. RSS feeds for content curation and aggregation
6. Group web conferencing links and features
7. Skills and training capabilities for social learning
