What are Nerd Girls? Did you know that very few women proportionally end up in technical fields or as engineers? You just have to look around at any technology conference to see how few of us there are, try it at Lotusphere next week. The goal of Nerd Girls is to get people to start noticing, and questioning, the minority of women in some technical fields.
This year marks the 4th year of Nerd Girls at Lotusphere and we have lots planned. In previous years we've focused on panels discussing issues that affect both men and women. Techies are a fairly unique personality type - often very confident, keen to assert their expertise and motivated by recognition of their skills. Many women, and some men, fall outside these personality types and drop out. Since we started in 2009 we've had panels and online forums as well as events at Lotusphere, User Groups and conferences around the world. We've been delighted to have not just women in technology attend, but fathers, partners and co-workers too.
This year for us is all about breaking out of a mould and we wanted to inspire you with some stories about approaching life, work and challenges in different ways. We are very excited to bring to you Spark Ideas, 7 people, both men and women, who have inspirational ideas to share with you - in just 6 minutes each. These aren't all work related, in fact few of them are, but they are about opportunities and the differences a small change in thinking can make to your life. Spark Ideas (NERD101) happens at 11.15 on Tuesday and we're delighted that Kristen Lauria will be one of our speakers. We'll also have a Birds of a Feather on Tuesday called - Spark Ideas, The Discussion at 5.45 to give us an opportunity to develop the ideas further. More details of the sessions and the talks are available on our blog http://nerdgirlsrule.wordpress.com.
There are two more Nerd Girl things you should know about - the first is the Great Geek Challenge, which takes place on Tuesday night. The 2nd is that the popular Nerd Girl badges are back this year if you want to show your support just pick one up at registration or around the conference (stop a Nerd Girl and ask!). If you are organising a user group in 2012, come and find us and we will give you some badges to take back too.
