Mobile computing enables IBM to be a social business too

As the worldwide marketing manager for IBM Sametime products, I tried to learn how to share and listen to customer feedback by being an avid blogger. In my new role as worldwide marketing manager for our Messaging and Collaboration solutions (think Lotus Notes, Lotus Domino, Lotus Symphony, Lotus Traveler and more), I hope to continue that experience. I plan on regularly sharing the latest news -- as well as some of my own ideas -- on the more established collaboration tools like email, calendars, and collaborative application development, how they're changing, and how they play a critical role in becoming a social business.
I'de like to start with mobile collaboration. As we blogged about last week, IBM introduced additional new mobile collaboration capabilities. Going social often involves going mobile, as mobile devices -- often your own personal smartphone or tablet -- become a primary way that more and more workers, not just professional road warriors, manage information and collaborate with their co-workers, clients and partners. That announcement has led to dozens of articles and blog posts, including eWeek, the Boston Globe, CMS Report, Security Week, Silicon Angle, VoIP Biz News, and several others in the US, Germany, Italy, and elsewhere.
For IBM, part of the process of helping clients go social means using those tools ourselves. "Drink our own champagne", if you will. We can test on both a small and large scale how these different ways of collaborating help us be a better company. We can then in turn use those experiences to further help our clients. In just one example, Ben Edwards, IBM VP of Digital Strategy and Development, shared IBM's experiences with social computing policies in a recent interview in InformationWeek.
Another example, in keeping with this post's mobile theme, is an article just published in Australia. In "Mobility in the Enterprise - Part 2", CIO discusses IBM's widespread embrace of mobile devices to help our employees collaborate. Steven Godbee, IBM's CIO for AN/Z, is quoted throughout the article helping to showcase IBM as a social business through our use of mobile devices, the Whirlwind app store, Lotus Notes Traveler, and mobile security initiatives. There are two quotes in particular that I would like to highlight:
My own example: even though I'm not considered a "mobile employee" (think Sales), I'm more and more using my own personal Apple iPhone to connect into my work life when my laptop is either not on or nearby. I'm even part of a self-organized community of several thousand IBMers who talk about using their iPhones and other Apple devices for work. There are similar communities for other mobile platforms. This is on top of our extensive Blackberry deployments, internal Android experiments, and more.
