Suffering from #SXSW Envy: How to Stay in the Loop No Matter Where You Are
by Colleen Burns (@colleeni), Influencer Relations
Interesting day -- I got a notice saying I had a spike in my Klout score, but thanks to Twitter, I feel more unpopular than ever. Why? #SXSW Every other post seems to remind me everyone is there! And I am here. About a thousand miles away from Austin!
Of course I am not alone. In fact, I've spent the past couple of weeks, along with my colleague Joyce Davis (@jadintx), mapping out plans to share all the SXSW goodness virtually. We've fired up Team Social once again to ensure that as much of the weirdness and excitement from Austin carries over into our blog, Tweets, Facebook updates and videos. (Joyce and many others are on the scene!) In fact, you can just bookmark the Social Business Social Media Aggregator and find it all there.
Now, if you are among the lucky (and slightly wet!) splashing into Austin today, don't miss the opening SXSW Interactive session at 2pm CT in the Austin Convention Center (Exhibit Hall 5). Don Tapscott (@dtapscott), named one of the top 10 business thinkers in the world by Thinkers50, kicks off the event with a presentation on "Rethinking Civilization for the Social Age." (You may also know Tapscott from his New York Times bestseller - Wikinomics and the follow-up MarcoWikinomics) If you follow the #SXSWIBM hashtags, we'll be sure to share the highlights from his session. But to be honest, what I am excited about is the possibility that our video crew will spend some time with Don this weekend and get his reactions to this new rise in social awareness and its effectiveness. I'll keep you posted on that -- and share the video when it's available.
The Future of Social Lounge (located next to the registration desk in the Austin Convention Center) is expected to be the "it" spot for all things social business. And actually - it's also a great place to plug in your phones, recharge your tablets and get some advice on how your company can become a social business. You can sign up for a no charge Business Value Assessment right there. Our video crew will also be buzzing -- interviewing authors, business leaders and conference presenters - just a plethora of some really impressive thought leaders. We'll be posting those videos to our social media aggregator all week long!
And speaking of really impressive folks - IBMers have got this conference covered! Below I list a few of the sessions they are leading - along with their Twitter IDs so you can follow them throughout the week. Many of these folks will also guest blog for us during the week. So check back and share your thoughts and reactions with them as well.
I just did a quick check on Twitter to see what's trending - SXSW isn't there yet. (#RIPBiggie and Uganda are hot topics right now) But curiosity and temptation got the best of me - and I tapped into my GPS app to see just how long it would take me to get to Austin. 18 hours and 4 minutes. Pretty sure #SXSW will trend on Twitter sooner than that!
If you're at SXSW, we want to hear your reactions to the sessions. Share your thoughts in the comment section below, Follow us on @IBMSocialBiz and use #SXSWIBM or post your thoughts to Facebook.com/IBMSocialBiz.
