Who in this world has not seen someone (including some IBMers) doused with a bucket of ice water lately? The folks who conceived the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge reimagined charitable giving, inspired by loved ones battling ALS and tapping the power of social media to propel the unprecedented phenomenon. But when they flowed that ice over their first volunteer victim, I’m sure they didn’t foresee the avalanche they triggered. At the time this blog was posted, the Challenge had raised a cool $53 million in donations.
And, apparently the donations are inspiring the ALS Association to reimagine things too. "Increased awareness and unprecedented financial support will enable us to think outside the box," the ALS Association said in a statement.
The Challenge works, in part, because it touches a childlike sense of fun in those being doused and the video audience alike. It’s a game of “Tag You’re It!” on a grand scale, passing the challenge to friends, colleagues and family members. And, wonderfully, all that fun helps a good cause, which makes the icy endeavor a very warm-hearted act, and that just feels good.
It is new ideas like the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge that inspire us to reimagine our world to achieve great, and sometimes noble, things.
So, let’s Reimagine Our World … let’s take that challenge too. There’s another opportunity to be inspired at the TED@IBM event in September, which will be live-streamed. You can hear from a great lineup of creative and innovative thinkers. Hope you will tune in.
