Getting Social in the Cloud with IBM SmartCloud Docs

I'm amazed when I look back at how the workforce has changed and adapted over the years. Employees are now more geographically dispersed and technologically connected than they ever were before. Yet the concept of a document has not kept up with the pace of the cloud and social revolutions, and has largely stayed unchanged. Organizations are realizing that documents are the life blood of how users communicate with each other, and the mode that most users were stuck in is really outdated for today's social business. IBM's strategy is not only to create more cost effective alternatives, but to reexamine the document model and how it can be evolved to better support a more nimble organization.
In a recent study, IDC found that time wasted each week by employees dealing with a variety of challenges related to working with documents was almost $20,000 per employee, per year; which is a loss of over 21% of an organization's total productivity. ¹
To meet this challenge, IBM has developed IBM SmartCloud Docs, which takes a new approach to helping teams work more effectively to create business documents using their web browser. With key collaborative services like, co-editing, file management and contextual commenting, built-right-in to the editing process, SmartCloud Docs can reduce the create and review cycles often associated with creating team-based documents. SmartCloud Docs improves productivity by reducing team collaboration burdens and also helps cut costs by decreasing reliance on desktop software.
To help illustrate the possibilities, I wanted to share how one of our clients is using SmartCloud Docs:
At Colleagues In Care (CIC), a non-profit dedicated to improving healthcare delivery in Haiti, medical workers and volunteers from around the globe are using the IBM SmartCloud for Social Business to access critical data and information for the current healthcare needs of the Haitian citizens. CIC's Global Health Collaboration Network connects the best medical minds and institutions to share information and to work together to create quality, evidence-based standards of care adapted for the realities confronting Haiti and other regions challenged by poverty and resource limitations.
The Emergency Medical Obstetrics (EMO) team is currently using IBM's SmartCloud Engage and SmartCloud Docs to design the first-of-its-kind certification program. EMO training will address how a physician, a nurse, or an auxiliary could stabilize and keep a patient from dying at locations where drugs and resources are unavailable. With SmartCloud Docs, an international team is able to collect, collate, edit, and co-create appropriate materials making up the EMO certification program and curriculum. They can upload various western medical protocols, Haitian protocols, multi-lingual and multi-formatted course materials. And by collecting this critical medical information in one place in the cloud, inviting people to participate in communities to hash out solutions, and collaborating online in real time to develop best possible practices for care, Colleagues in Care is becoming a real social business in the cloud.
