Gearing up for IBM Connect: Taking Social Business to school

Social business certainly left its mark on 2012 and we're expecting much of the same in 2013, but the big question we're all asking is 'What's next for social?'
Fresh off the BusinessNext Conference in Vegas earlier this month, I'm heading to IBM Connect, IBM's premier social business conference where all the experts, leading organizations and social fanatics converge to talk about what's next in social business.
This will be my first go around at Connect and I will not only just be attending as a spectator, taking in sessions ranging from creating a smarter workforce to providing exceptional customer experiences with social, I will also lead a discussion on how social networking is affecting the academic community. I'll be joined by Peter Cardon, a professor from University of Southern California, and Simon Vaughan, who heads up IT for Cardiff University, one of Britain's leading teaching and research universities. Each of us will share our unique experiences helping to implement social business into academia.
Social goes to school
Just as social media has infiltrated pop culture and business, we're now seeing a significant uptick in the academic community. Academics are realizing that the use of videos, blogs, wikis and profiles aren't just for students, these tools can be used to transform the delivery of education. Courses focused on using social networking tools in the context of work are being added to major universities across the country. Researchers and faculty are reinventing their inboxes and mode of communication, taking advantage of file sharing and communities to collaborate across campus and increase classroom participation.
Over the past year, I have been teaching classes at San Jose State University and University of California, Berkeley, Extension School, focused on social business. The curriculum has quickly become mission-critical for students and their career goals. With a rise in social-related jobs and organizations fundamentally transforming the way they conduct business through the use of social networking technology, those preparing to enter the workforce are keen on honing their social savvy for the skills they'll need to land jobs in today's competitive job market.
At Connect, Cardon and Vaughan will be bringing interesting experiences related to social in academia. Cardon and USC are fresh off a partnership with IBM and its The Great Mind Challenge program where students work with IBM experts to learn about the characteristics of social business. Students assess the social savvy of a target company, and then apply social networking technologies to the company's business operations witnessing a tremendous shift in their productivity, collaboration and innovation. Students learn about the value social business generates for organizations when every department, from HR to marketing, to product development to customer service to sales, integrates social networking tools into their work flow and business processes.
At Cardiff, students and faculty are using IBM's social networking software, Connections, to collaborate across campus on research projects, crowdsource ideas, find experts to solve problems faster, blog about special projects and much more. In 2012 it was pretty clear social business was here stay. In 2013, it's exciting to see how many facets of business and culture social is now impacting from organizations to the classroom. I'm sure I'll learn even more at IBM Connect and look forward to sharing those insights with you in future posts.
