For the second year in a row, IBM hosted hundreds of students for GBS College Day at Lotusphere. Bus loads of students arrived at the Swan and Dolphin Resort as early as 6:30am to register and start their day. The Future Social Business Leaders were eager to attend sessions, labs, the solutions showcase, and the career fair. IBM and GBS staff were anxious to lead and mentor the students to success. The excitement led to an uber-productive day with great conversations and ideas shared between the students and Lotusphere attendees.
The Future Business Leaders attended the Open General Session and rocked out to OK Go rock band, who performed their most popular songs with their well-known elaborate and quirky music videos on the big screens. The band's leader got the students full, undivided attention when he shouted, “geeks are the new rock stars!” The concert was followed by surprise guest speaker, Michael J. Fox. Although most of the students were not born when Fox's hit movie, Back to the Future, was released, his comical yet heartfelt speech inspired everyone in the room.
The inspiration continued as IBM Executives and Business Partners shared their stories about IBM Connections, IBM Smart Cloud, Lotus Notes, Mobile, and other Social Business software. Several students said they now have a better understanding of what Social Business means and are anxious to learn more.
After the OGS, the students attended Lab Sessions. Lab 4: Meet the Developers, was a favorite among the students. In this lab session the students sat down and talked with IBMers and business partners. At lunch, the students participated in a Q&A format with panelists. GBS College Alumni, Adam Lazarus, sat on the panel and answered questions from the students.
Later, the students attended the Future Social Business Leaders Career Fair. They had the opportunity to network and leave resumes with business partners who attended the career fair. The 2012 GBS College Day was a great success. We look forward to working with the GBS students again next year!
