Another important part of the IBM Smart Business is the Smart Cube. Once a solution is found in the Smart Market there is a back-end platform that the solution runs on. What's different about the Smart Cube compared to just your plain off the shelf hardware is that it's a complete application platform with all hardware and software needed, preconfigured and ready-to-use, with no manuals required to set up and get running. In a few easy steps the solution can be up and running. The solution integration provides the simplicity that small businesses need to cut down on the IT skill needed. The operating system, middleware and other components are preloaded on the Smart Cube, the Smart Market solution is automatically detected by the Smart Cube and all entitlements and the solution itself is downloaded to the Smart Cube.
Set up and configuration is very easy - step by step and wizard driven the small business owner will find it intuitive and easy to use. Setting up e-mail, daily back-ups, instant messaging, and the application have the same interface, the same look and feel from a set-up and configuration standpoint, it looks like one solution. The customer no longer has to handle multiple CD's, read manuals and know things like IP addresses, ports, and network configurations.
The Smart Cube is always connected back to the Smart Market - it's how additional solutions can be added to an existing Smart Cube, how fixes for all aspects of the solution (application, middleware, operating system) are downloaded and applied to the Smart Cube. The connection back to the market provides the interface back into the support structure as well. Access to the knowledge base of information as well as electronic submissions of problems.
The focus on deep integration and a total solution view has enabled a new level simplicity and experience that is consistent across all elements of the solution. The Smart Cube is a crucial part of the platform that ties together the whole experience from the Smart Market to the Smart Desk.
I would like to hear your thoughts on what we've done to simplify through integration - the always connected aspect and the ability to easily add additional solutions.
