This was quite informative. Just another proof that with chaos theory, even small insignificant chatter can actually amount to a valuable set of data that can help businesses grow. The key, as you said, is active listening.
While I did some marketing consultancy for a NJ-based company I used an analysis of when people get most aggravated during their workday, and used this to advise when this company should do email campaigning.
Listening to people, and knowing when to talk, can make quite a difference: your pitch gets listened to vs. your email pitch ends in the trash.
