What incentives do you provide for an engaging social network? This is a question asked often and there is no one global solution available. A working incentive system needs to be based on the type of role/task of the individual and/or team as shown in research brought to light by people such as Daniel Pink (The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us) and Dan Ariely – http
People are far more intuitive and subconsciously reactive then typical leaders of organizations choose to acknowledge. Here’s an example, if a manager encourages the team to use social tools for collaboration but he/she continues to rely on old fashion communication methods without taking part in the new solutions, they employees will learn very quickly to play in the space that is most visible to he/her. This can also be extended to how people are provided feedback and recognition on their work. If the conversation of the leaders in a company continues to stay within old fashion silos, then the tangible rewards one sets in place for being collaborative with social tools is far less effective.
The solution for proper incentives needs to be structured by example as well as supported by quantitative metrics/targets of collaboration. If such an approach is established and additional incentives are added through peer recognition on what is valuable, then we can see shift in the way work happens. This shift can take us from the old fashion silo oriented means of the past to the more open, creative and engaging means made available to us through social tools today and in the future.
