On Monday November 8, IBM announced new software and services that will help organizations become social businesses. Why is this announcement important?

We are very excited to report that IBM developerWorks (IBM dW) has been named a winner in the 2010 Forrester Groundswell Awards (B2B). The awards are broken down by what stage of the social cycle the winners best exemplify: Listening, Talking, Energizing, Spreading, Supporting, Embracing. IBM developerWorks won in the "Supporting" category, and here's what Forrester had to say:
"IBM developerWorks is a free community and social network for 8 million developers and IT professionals worldwide. Today Forbes published a discussion with IBM's Jeff Schick on the steps organizations should take to capture knowledge and garner business intelligence. The story positions IBM as a thought leader in enterprise social software highlighting the opportunities organizations can achieve to gain efficiencies and increase productivity when they embrace enterprise-wide collaboration.
In the article, Jeff said "It's really easy to describe the way social media and collaboration changes a company." He goes on to say, "At IBM, we have thousands of communities formed around specific topics. For example, our community of Women in Europe has 23,000 members. Our external developerWorks community has 8 million. The people in these communities are sharing knowledge about what affects them and about how to get the job done."
With Lotus Connections and Lotus Quickr software, corporations can use blogs, wikis, team rooms, file sharing and more to become more agile and competitive.
