This is a focused on storage hardware than x86 servers but we need to keep our eyes open to innovative technology that helps our bottom line.
We have announced significant advancements in virtualization, solid-state storage, and encryption. We have more than twenty new and enhanced products and services that include:
I’d like to specifically highlight our solid state and encryption news here.
Solid-state Storage can improve throughput up to 800 percent, helping to speed up hard-to-tune applications with no additional tuning. Solid-state storage is available for all IBM platforms: System z, POWER, and System x. IBM is pioneering smart use of solid-state storage on the DS8000, which can gain 300 percent throughput with just 10 percent solid-state storage, a much more affordable way to boost performance. The new solid-state option for SAN Volume Controller can achieve an amazing 800,000 I/O per second using ordinary SAN disk from IBM or other suppliers.
Drive-level encryption for disk and tape can improve security with little or no overhead. Years ago, IBM, LSI, and Seagate formed an industry alliance to standardize drive-level encryption and enable centralized key management. Since then, IBM has been first to market with drive level encryption and key management for enterprise disk, enterprise tape, midrange disk, and midrange tape. And we continue to add more encrypting drive options, namely:
- New DS8700 enterprise storage with encrypting disk option
- New DS5020 Express with encrypting disk option, for mid-size organizations
- New 600GB encrypting drives for DS5100 and DS5300 midrange disk
All of our innovative technologies are designed to help clients improve throughput …resiliency…and security -- while controlling costs.
